Winthrop Takes Out Tigers |
CLEMSON - Winthrop righthander Kevin Slowey came in to Wednesday's game at Clemson billed as the best pitcher the Tigers would see through the season's first 10 games. He did not disappoint.
Slowey faced only three batters over the minimum Wednesday, tossing a complete-game four-hitter to lead the visiting Eagles over Clemson, 8-2, on a cold, overcast day at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The Tigers (5-5) sent more than three batters to the plate in a single inning just once vs. Slowey. That was the fourth, when they bunched together three hits for their only two runs of the game - the big hit of the frame a two-run double by Kris Harvey. Slowey (5-0) struck out five and didn't walk a batter on the afternoon. His counterpart, Clemson freshman David Kopp, wasn't as lucky. Kopp lasted just two batters deep into the third inning, giving up six runs (five earned) in suffering his second loss of the season (0-2). He gave up three runs in the first - two coming on a two-out single by Winthrop shortstop Matt Repec - one in the second and two in the third. The third inning run was a mammoth solo home run over the rightfield grandstand platform by Jacob Dempsey. Winthrop (15-3) would add single runs in the sixth and ninth innings to close out the scoring. Dempsey added a pair of singles to his homer to pace the Eagles offense, while Repec and Alan Robbins added two hits each. Clemson's major bright spot of the day was the relief work of sophomore Steve Farris. Relieving Kopp with nobody out in the third inning, Farris pitched 5 1/3 solid inning of relief, allowing just one run while scattering six hits. But Clemson's offense could do nothing with Slowey. In fact, the only other inning besides the fourth in which the Tigers reached Slowey for a base hit - Tyler Colvin's one-out single in the seventh - Andy D'Alessio ended the inning by grounding into a double play. Clemson is back in action this weekend with a home-and-home series vs. South Carolina. The teams will battle at 2 p.m. Saturday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, then meet again at 1:30 p.m. at Sarge Frye Field Sunday in Columbia.
