Virginia Takes Game Three 9-2 Over Clemson

Virginia jumped out to a 5-0 lead and cruised to a 9-2 win over Clemson in front of 4,037 fans at Doug Kingsmore Stadium Sunday. The Cavaliers totaled 13 hits to Clemson's seven, as they salvaged the series after the Tigers won the first two games. The Tigers' six-game winning streak was snapped, dropping to 21-14 (11-4 ACC). The Cavaliers improved to 25-13 (6-10 ACC).

Jeff Kamrath (6-3) kept the Clemson lineup off balance all day, yielding two runs on five hits in 6.0 innings pitched to earn the win. Robert Rohrbaugh (4-2) suffered the loss, giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits in 5.2 innings pitched.

Ryan Zimmerman was 3-for-5 with an RBI, and Sean Doolittle was 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs to lead Virginia. Adrian Casanova was 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored for the Tigers.

Virginia opened the scoring in the second on Doolittle's eighth home run of the year, a solo shot to right. The Cavaliers added another run on Mike Campagna's two-out bloop single to right that scored Brandon Guyer.

Virginia added a bizarre run in the fourth. Guyer walked with two outs and stole second. Casanova's throw hit Guyer and bounced into left-center, allowing him to score.

Matt Street led off the sixth with a single and moved to third when Zimmerman singled on an 0-2 pitch. After Zimmerman stole second, Doolittle plated Street with an RBI groundout. A groundout by Matt Bernstine with the bases loaded scored Zimmerman, ending the day for Rohrbaugh.

Casanova led off the sixth with a double and moved to third on Herman Demmink's single to left. Brad Chalk hit into a groundball double play, with the throw from shortstop barely beating him. Casanova scored on the play for Clemson's first run of the day.

The Cavaliers answered in the seventh when Kyle Werman tripled to lead off the inning, and scored on Street's sacrifice fly to center.

Tyler Colvin led of the bottom of the seventh with an infield single and moved to second when Kris Harvey was hit by a pitch. Virginia then brought in Doolittle to pitch, and Travis Storrer hit a sharp line drive to left field, but right at Guyer for the first out of the inning. Andy D'Alessio followed with a single through the left side that scored Colvin. Doolittle then forced Stan Widmann to ground into a double play, ending the Tiger rally.

Virginia added three runs in the ninth for the final margin.

The Tigers return to action Tuesday at 5:00 PM when they resume a suspended game with Western Carolina at Doug Kingsmore Stadium from April 12. The two teams will play their regularly-scheduled game at 7:15 PM, or 30 minutes after the completion of the first game if it goes past 6:45 PM.
