Clemson’s senior designated hitter entered Friday’s NCAA Regional contest against Coastal Carolina with two home runs – including his only career grand slam – and seven RBI in just three career games in Columbia.

Friday, he added to that total, getting an RBI single in the first inning and his second career grand slam in the second to lead Clemson to an 11-3 win over Coastal Friday afternoon, sending the Tigers’ to Saturday’s 4 p.m. winners’ bracket contest against the winner of South Carolina and Manhattan.

In all, the Tigers scored nine of their 11 runs with two out, while they collected 10 of the 13 hits with two out.

“Phil had a big hit for us, and we got some big hits with two outs,” Clemson head coach Jack LeggettJack Leggett

said. “Offensively we had a nice day, and defensively we played well and we got some big outs on the mound. It was a complete game for us.”

Pohl said he can't explain his success in Columbia.

“I don’t know if there is anything about the stadium,” Pohl said after the game. “I was fortunate to see a fastball in a hitters’ count and thankfully put a good swing on it. A couple of years ago, my other one [grand slam] was probably wind-aided. The whole order really swung the bat well today. I was just fortunate to get a fastball in a hitters’ count.”

Brittle won the race, and Felder never slowed down rounding third and scored easily to make it 2-0 Clemson. Teams have spent a good portion of the season pitching around Tiger third baseman Richie Shaffer, and that was again the case with two outs in the second, sending Pohl to the plate with the bases loaded. Pohl then slammed a 3-1 Wallace fastball into the seats in left for his fifth homer of the year, a grand slam that made it 6-0.

replaced Firth after the delay, and he ran into trouble in the sixth, giving up one run but leaving the bases loaded. However, the Tigers answered with two more runs in the bottom of the inning, getting RBI singles by Baum and Kieboom to make it 10-3 and added a single run in the bottom of the eighth to finish out the scoring.

Haselden pitched the final four innings – giving up just the one earned run – in picking up his first save of the season.

Leggett said he would wait until after the South Carolina/Manhattan contest to make a decision on his Saturday starter, but it would be either Dominic LeoneDominic Leone

“We got some big hits with two out today,” Pohl said. “And we got some production out of the bottom of the lineup and got good pitching from Kevin and David. Hopefully we can keep this rolling.”
