Richard is a 4-star 2014 prospect out of Savannah (GA) Calvary Baptist who boasts offers from 11 schools, including Georgia, N.C. State, South Carolina and UCLA. He is also the nephew of former Georgia great Herschel Walker, but that doesn’t mean the 6-5, 227-pounder is a lock for the Bulldogs.
In fact, he really likes what he is hearing from the Clemson coaching staff about how they would use him in the Clemson offense.
“That is a place I feel like I could come in and they could use me in a lot of different ways,” Richard told TigerNet. “They told me they think I am very versatile, and they told me they could use me all over the field on the offensive side of the ball.”
Ford caught 40 passes for 480 yards and eight touchdowns as Clemson’s third-leading receiver last season, and Allen won the Mackey Award as the nation’s best tight end in 2011 when he reeled in 49 passes for 492 yards and eight scores.
Richard likes those kinds of numbers.
“Anytime you have a player that wins an award like the Mackey Award, you can’t complain,” Richard said. “That is very attractive to me. Those numbers are amazing. I would like to come in there and do the same thing. I think I am a pass-catching tight end that can stretch the field. I can block, too, but I think my strengths are using my speed to stretch the field and catching the football.”
Richard was in town for Clemson’s Elite Junior Day a few weeks ago, and he loved everything about the visit.
Richard said he hears from the Clemson staff the most, and would have to say the Tigers are the leader for his services at this point, but he is also beginning to hear more and more N.C. State and Georgia.
However, he likes what Clemson is showing him on film.
“I like the coaching staff at Clemson,” he said. “Coach [Dabo] Swinney and Coach Morris and Coach [Jeff] Scott, they are all good guys. They are doing things the right way, and that offense is very attractive. What they are showing me on film and how they use the tight end is something I like.”
As a junior, he caught 22 passes for 341 yards and three touchdowns.
