Commentary: It’s Time For All Of Us To Move On

Commentary: It’s Time For All Of Us To Move On

Clemson's trip to Wake Forest looms as a much bigger indicator of whether or not Clemson will be a factor in the Atlantic Division race in 2008. Full Story »

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Everytime we "move on", we get embarrassed AGAIN!

Oct 6, 2008, 9:26 AM

At some point it's time to stand up and say enough is enough, and until we stop "moving on" after every heartbreaking loss, this program will continue to rev in neutral.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Most of you.

The time for "enough is enough" to come to a head will be

Oct 6, 2008, 9:32 AM

in December, not midseason.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I say it comes as soon as we are out of the division race

Oct 6, 2008, 9:33 AM

which might be Thursday around midnight

If we lose to WFU Thursday night,we are out of the Atlantic Division race. There will be no chance to win the confernce title. The search for the new head coach begins then.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe a search behind the scenes, but NOTHING will

Oct 6, 2008, 9:48 AM

happen publicly until seasons end. Despite it happening every now and then, it is still frowned upon in college sports.

Oct 10, 2008, 5:06 AM [ in reply to The time for "enough is enough" to come to a head will be ]

OK,so we wait until December. And if Terry Don doesn't get rid of Tommy,or Rob Spence, what then? If nothing else,I think I'd be looking to see who{or whom }might be avaiable.By the way, this comes on the morning after the loss to Wake, and only two days removed from Auburn firing their Offensive co-ordinator.No,I don't think we should look to hiring Tony Franklin, but the similarities between Auburn's amenic offense ,and ours does draw some interesting parallels.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Couldn't agree more...HOWEVER, WE BETTER BEAT WFU***

Oct 6, 2008, 9:31 AM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's hard to move on when people keep rehashing everything.

Oct 6, 2008, 9:33 AM

Many of us had started to get over it, and then we get Roy's post game analysis on Thursday, almost a full week after the loss.

Re: Commentary: It’s Time For All Of Us To Move On

Oct 6, 2008, 9:42 AM

You are right!Beat WFU and we are in first place.Lose the game and start looking for a new coach.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree with the Article, but sometimes when you love,

Oct 6, 2008, 10:05 AM

when you care, you need to do things that hurt.
To me, the best medicine is for this team to lose, so we can get rid of CTB.
We go to Tampa, great!!, but the side effect, we keep CTB. And more of the same.

Bottom line to me is: We will not make it to Tampa. CTB will lose to Duke or Virginia. I am convinced that CTB is not capable of winning here or anywhere.
Clemson has given him everything, facilities, money, support, etc, etc.

Your article gave me hope, but as long as CTB is there, hope is not possible.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that's some faulty logic there...

Oct 6, 2008, 11:42 AM

if we get to tampa then something DID change.

Rooting for your team to lose just to get rid of a coach is wrong-headed IMHO. You pull for the tigers because you love Clemson... win or lose. If Tommy drives this thing into the ditch I'll not love Clemson any less, and I'll never root for them to lose.

If you want to do something that hurts that will get your point across you could stop giving money, buying tickets or going to games... but no true fan can pull against their team.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: that's some faulty logic there...

Oct 7, 2008, 12:48 PM

Agreed, I want TB gone as much as anyone but I never want Clemson to lose.

But I would like to echo your sentiments to those who boo Harper and wish he would get hurt so Korn can play.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: that's some faulty logic there...

Oct 7, 2008, 8:52 PM [ in reply to that's some faulty logic there... ]

Couldn't have said it better. I swear if I'm out Thursday night watching the game and a Clemson fan starts cheering against us, I'll b*tch slap them. I'll already be out in Columbia dealing with a bunch of Coot fans that think they are beating us when we lose. We then have to wait until Nov. to shut them up.

Might be time for a "Change" instead of moving on.

Every Clemson fan (non-tnetters) I've talked to in the last week is tired of the year in year out roller coaster ride the Tigers have been on for the past 10 years. Always the brides maid never the bride. Not one has come to TBs defense and I've been one of those who have defended him in the past.

A theory

Oct 6, 2008, 11:14 AM

How many times has TB's job security been in question??? Somehow we NEVER get rid of him. He is still here after all the ups and downs.....He is still in Death Valley!!!

That's Why I say rejoice Tigers fans! We will win out! Go to Tampa and Bring home the ACC crown!!

BUT!!!!!!! We will then play in the Orange bowl, play like high school kids and be blown out. And TB will still be in Death Valley. It's like herpes.....never really goes away or gets better. Sorry Tiger Nation

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

An ACC crown would be great!

That's EXACTLY what I've been thinking (hoping & fearing)...

Oct 6, 2008, 1:39 PM [ in reply to A theory ]

The ultimate survivor, TB, with his back to the wall, wins the ACC (with more talent than any team in the ACC, in a down year for the ACC). Then Clemson either beats the Big East champ or gets it's butt kicked by BYU in the Orange Bowl.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So now an ACC championship is not enough?

I dont think so, and I dont think Im alone. Actually winning his first ACC championship in 10 years of trying is the only thing that will keep me and my family in seats we can barely afford with Tommy as coach. I will "move on" to watching the games on TV

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm not sure moving on with TB is the right choice.

Oct 6, 2008, 11:50 AM

Lets face it DeathVally has become a stadium where any team on any given day can beat the tigers. I think that TB is a good man with good intentions; however I believe that he has brought us as far as he can. Tradition says that a strong defense with a powerful running game wins championships, hence Alabama. These X and O's trick plays may be ok for a MAC or CUSA, but it doesn't cut it in the ACC, especially when we play SEC teams. If Johnson can do it at Vandy, Cutcliffe can do it at Duke, and Grobe can do it a WF, thae Bowden should be able to do it with All Clemson's talent. I feel for those kids that are putting forth all that effort for a 3-2 RECORD.

It’s Time For All Of Us To Move On - Still Solid Orange

Oct 6, 2008, 12:53 PM

We drove 1200 miles (roundtrip) to watch the Maryland game. Still a big Tiger fan. Still an IPTAY member. No longer a Tommy Bowden fan. Just like George Bush. I'm tired of hearing him. Just waiting for the end of his administration and hope that not too much damage has been done to the nation. In Tommy's case, the Tiger Nation.

As for the Tigers, I want to see Thunder & Lightning stepping it up a notch. I want to see Harper back to his game. The Defense is really coming along. Hamlin is a great player. The front four are getting tough. I want to see Death Valley sacred again and not allow teams to embarass us in the Valley.

Let's go Tigers. Some time you have to overcome poor officiating. Poor coaching is tougher to overcome. Let's hope Tommy goes into his back-to-the-wall mentality and takes the Tigers to Tampa.

I'm still wearing Orange and paying for it in Maryland! But not this week.... Maybe they think it's Virginia Orange! ; )

Go Tigers!

hum...its funny how you use the term "fair", some reason this entire 10 years has not been "fair". I have for years been a die hard, bleed orange, season ticket holder, gave up a lot to save the money to attend the games, I do and will always support the Tigers, but lets be realistic. The money you or I spend does not impact the players, this what you call a game, is what Clemson calls a business, and like any business, the only way to effect or force change at the helm is to take it in the wallet.

All of Us Support The Tigers - That's Why

Oct 6, 2008, 1:54 PM

we are all so miserable right now about this football team. Bowden has proven he can get the team off the mat. But, we are tired of him getting on the mat every year and all of the anxiety that goes with that. He has the most talented team in the conference and is playing a fairly weak schedule. In the polls, Clemson is not even listed among "others receiving votes." Yes, the coaches spend a lot of time away from their families - but they are getting paid handsomely to do so. Heck, in 33 years in the Army I spent time away from my family too for a whole lot less pay. 2008 is Bowden's year - WIN the conference championship or please get out of town!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oct 6, 2008, 2:01 PM

But I am done with Bowden. He can't motivate players with the talent he has. That is what a head coach does these days is motive and get the boys up. I have heard about his horrible half time pep talks and I am sick of seeing us come out flat in the second half..,

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson won't fire Bowden next year, so get cheering.

Oct 6, 2008, 2:44 PM

Clemson is in single-elimination mode right now. Everyone knows it. So it'll be exciting to see how they respond. They COULD still win the ACC. And here's the funny (somewhat pathetic) thing...

I think Clemson STILL has at least as good a chance of winning the ACC as in any previous year of Bowden's tenure. That's not saying much. But that didn't stop us from cheering before, so it shouldn't now.

Anyway, I think Clemson is stuck with Bowden for a few more years. Politically, I just don't see how Clemson's president and AD can fire Bowden just a few months after they granted him a $4M buyout. To do so would show their incompetence and jeopardize their own jobs.

Barker and TDP didn't grant Bowden a $4M buyout because they were certain that he'd win the ACC this year. They granted it to him because they like the kind of clean, winning (though not championship winning) program that he runs. Winning 8-9 games is good enough for them and many fans. They would not have granted Bowden a $4M buyout (with no strings attached) if there was any chance that they'd fire him within the next few years.

Keep in mind that they knew that they didn't even NEED to grant Bowden a $4M buyout. Right after Bowden visited his AD buddy at Arkansas, ESPN reported that Arkansas' board of trustees had rejected Bowden because he is too mediocre. So everyone knew that Bowden had no other options but to sign with Clemson. The president granted Bowden the buyout because he wanted to keep Bowden, pretty much regardless of Clemson's results this season.

Based on the politics, my guess is that if Clemson even gets to the ACCCG, nothing will change. Otherwise the administration will try to placate the fans by forcing Bowden to fire the OC, Rob Spence, who is clearly incompetent. That won't completely satisfy the alumni, but it will placate the grumbling fans just enough to keep them donating and showing up for the next few years to see if the local hero, Willy Korn, can lead the Tigers to the promised land with a competent OC. So get cheering because I think we're stuck with Bowden for a few more years.

Don't get me wrong. I've been calling for Bowden's ouster for years. I'm just guessing at the political outcome of this season.

Go Tigers!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oct 6, 2008, 10:59 PM [ in reply to Clemson won't fire Bowden next year, so get cheering. ]

You are so right! Bowden is NOT GOING TO BE FIRED! GET OVER IT! Since the O line always seems to be a problem, how does Brad Scott always survive any shake-up? Maybe he and Spence should both go.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Because TB is a nice, loyal guy (except the Arkansas bluff).

Oct 7, 2008, 2:25 PM

My guess is that Bowden is too nice to fire his old buddies, Rob Spence & Brad Scott. They all seem like one big, happy family. However, if Clemson doesn't at least get to the ACCCG, I expect that the administration will fire Spence & Scott. But they'll make it look as though Bowden had the leadership skills to take charge and fire them.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How can you...

Oct 6, 2008, 3:54 PM

focus all of our goals on an ACC championship only? Did anyone ever consider what happens if we win the ACC and go to the Orange Bowl?

We get whipped, thats what! If Clemson can barely compete for a shot at the ACC title, there is no way we can compete at the national level.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: How can you...

Oct 6, 2008, 4:44 PM

If Clemson were to start playing well enough to win the ACC, then I think Clemson would stand a pretty good chance of beating the Big East champ (Pitt or USF) this year, or say, Boise St. If Clemson played the Big-12 #2 team or BYU, then I think Clemson would likely get creamed.

Either way, it's hard to imagine Bowden turning Clemson into a team that can consistently go toe-to-toe with the top teams in the nation.

Heck he's only:
7-26 (.212) against AP Top 25 finishers, and
0-8 (.000) against AP Top 10 finishers.

Clemson football is a business. Clemson and IPTAY made that clear with their game day parking changes last year and the seat equity plan, this year.

Business is about performance. If my job performance was anything like TB's, VC's or RS's, I'd have been fired and escorted from the building long ago.

TB and his buddies, are here to stay unless financial support and ticket sales drop. Nothing else matters.

If not for the coaches... for the players! They need our support through the good times and bad times and to give up on what we all love is rediculous! Why wait all year on college football to come back around only to give up after just 5 games? Last i seen we played more than that. You have summed up the situation well and indeed it is time to move on. The Maryland fiasco has just made me totally sick and not just about losing but how we lost. One thing that TB was right about was that the reasons and people responsible for that loss were in the Clemson locker room, assuming Spence was in attendance.
Regardless, I will stop the coach bashing and help pull our Tiger players through the remainder of the season by attending the games with a positive attitude and yelling support as we all should. I hope we do not have anymore of those embarassing boos. That's not how we should voice our displeasure or disappointment in this group of coaches and their decisions. They know they are not getting the job done so there's no need to boo the team.
I hope the team can overcome the ALA and Md losses and focus on winning a conference championship and a bowl game but I'm not quite the "sunshine pumper" yet.
