Referring--how can UNC get 36 foul shots and we only get 7?

I mean, honestly we should be happy we only went to the line 7 times. Had we gone to the line 36 times like they did we would have lost by like 30 more than we did. 1-7 if freaking terrible. Oliver has done a wonderful job with our basketball program, but come on!! Every game we lost this year is because our free throw percentage has been near 50% or worse. First UNC game we were like 12-25. Make even one more of those and we wouldn't have gone to OT in the first place. At UNC 1-7 ( 14% ). Make any one of those and it would have been over. You cannot beat good teams with a that type of foul shooting. Until we step up that aspect of the game we can never be compared to teams such as Duke and UNC. Maybe we'll get it fixed, because if we didn't have that problem, we would be pretty close to being undefeated right now! A lot of people are going to get mad at this post and say you cant blame a loss on one foul shot and I would totally agree with that if we shot consistently as a team around 75-85% because hey, everyone misses now and then. But I do have the right to say it cost us the game when we play awesome and shoot 14% at the line. If I were and opposing team late in the game I would put in the worst players I have and foul us every possesion, which pretty much promises we wont score in the last few minutes of the game. Hope I didnt ruffle any feathers. Someone please correct me if I am wrong if this insight is not true. Until next time... GO TIGERS!!!

apparently OP was quoted somewhere saying we shoot near 80% as a team in practice, but can't do it in games. take it for what its worth.

impossible to win. I would have much rather seen us go to the line another 20 times, even if we missed them all. Then atleast I could say we did it to ourselves. But as it was...we didn;t blow the lead the refs let UNC bulldoze their way back in.

Do not! tell me I am full of crap when even all of the sports analyst on ESPN agree that clemson would most likely be undefeated or close to it if we shot free throws like we did last night against georgia tech.
If you would like to join the gamecocks and complain about everything that went wrong except your straight up playing, then be my guest. Every team gets a few games where the refs suck. It is not just clemson, and they somehow win anyway.
I guess my point is that you cannot control the officiating aspect of any sport, whether it be football or basketball. Why not work on the things that you can control such as free throw percentages. Ok,... lets do some math...
Clemson beat georgia tech when cliff hammonds had his carreer high points at home by a total of 82-67 and shot 23 of 32 from the foul line (71%). If we shot 14% such as in the UNC game we would have been a generous 5-32 from the line!! and 18 points less we would have scored making the game a 64-67 LOSS!!! If UNC was 14% on the line clemson would have strait up dominated that final score regardless of the refs! And for the record, there are bad calls every game so i guess you can be a gamecock and every close game we lose blame it on the refs when the real problem lies in team... get over it.
Now thats out of the way, I am in no way saying Clemson's team is bad, in fact we are very good!! And when we shoot free throws consistently we will most likely blow out teams by 15 pts or more in the acc! Teams like duke and unc would be close wins instead of close losses. GO TIGERS!!!

Think of it this way, if we go to the line 37 times, we can shoot 14% or even worse and still win the game because as you say it, one more free throw and we would have won.

Why should we expect anything other than what happened Sunday night. Officials in the ACC stink when it comes to calling games fairly.

I was at the game and from the perspective of being there, we were simply beat at the line. The officiating was ridiculous. I give my props to the Carolina fans though. Even when their team was down by 15, you couldn't hear yourself think in the Dome. The last 3 minutes was about momentum and Carolina had it.

Truth of the matter is...it is easy for a team to come from behind when they don't have to worry about fouls being called...You can say whatever you want about us blowing a lead, but that is easy to do when a foul gets called on us and not them. I say these young men were robbed. But life goes on and it ain't fair...so no need crying anymore...just bust em in the mouth next time. The only way to beat UNC is going to be out score them by twenty or more...even then the refs will get it even.

exactly.
if i had to choose one play that ticked me off the most (there are MANY from which to choose) it was late in the game when Hansbrough was going for the steal. he knocked the ball loose, dove for the ball as it rolled into the backcourt and gained possession while laying (sliding) on the floor. without a pivot foot, that is what most referees call "traveling."
...last night, it was a foul against Clemson.

As one of a limited number of Clemson Fans it hurt so bad to lose that lead. The Powder blue crowd was really upset and concerned. After the game in the UNC faithfuls post game gathering they ahted seeing the Clemson orange in the room but several admitted they ahd seen enough of Clemson for the year - my responce was see ya at the ACC tournament. Close o so close I thought I was going to see the new history

I thought there was some poor officiating both ways, but when it came down to it, Hansbrough gets ridiculous calls every game.
Stitts 3rd and 4th fouls, both blocks, were pathetic. The first one was when Hansbrough stole the ball in the backcourt(how does that even happen?) and he backed down on Stitt, bumped him over and somehow it was a block.
About two minutes later, at the 12:00 minute mark Carolina got a defensive rebound and Danny Green brought the ball up. Stitt was at the top of the key and Green lowered his shoulder, knocking him completely over. I've watched it in slomo 25 times and he was clearly set. The official had a perfect view and somehow still called a block.
Hansbrough and Booker were locking arms all night. When Clemson had the ball, it would be an offensive foul. Then, when Carolina had the ball, as was the case for Booker's 5th, it was defensive. How you foul out a star in overtime of a conference game because he locked up arms is unbelievable.
The way I look at it is, if you switched the jerseys, would the same calls be made? Would they have called a 5th foul on Hansbrough in the same scenario. Absolutely not. It's clearly biased officiating.
Wow, I can't stop. We bring the ball up the court, but oh wait, Roy wanted a timeout. So he gets it. Do we get the ball on the side? Nope. We get to start all the way back down under our basket facing a full court press, even though we already had it to half court during the 4 seconds that elapsed before they realized it was really 8 versus 5.
And with all that, we couldn't manage to make 2 free throws in 50 minutes of gameplay...
