10 guys going to the NFL but Clemson unranked in 2007

May 2, 2007, 2:11 PM

It's disappointing that Clemson was tied for #7 in the nation for number of players drafted by the NFL (and had 10 players go to the NFL so far in 2007), yet Clemson finished the season unranked. I've long been a proponent of giving Tommy Bowden time to re-build the program by recruiting and grooming talent. But as of last season, I think Clemson now has enough player talent in the pipeline to be a top tier team. So now I'm thinking there's a problem with the coaching.

Yeah, I know Clemson had critical injuries last season, and Miami & FSU didn't do well either (last season anyway) despite joining the tie for #7. But it's getting hard for me to imagine the likes of Urban Meyer, Pete Carrol, Nick Saban, Frank Beamer, Jim Grobe, Tom O'Brian, et al, finishing unranked with Clemson's talent pool.

Among the 20 predictions from ESPN's Mark Schlabach for the '07-'08 season was:
" 11. Clemson will struggle again: The Tigers will have a pair of 1,000-yard runners, James Davis and C.J. Spiller, but they'll lose to Florida State in the opener and will be 3-3 after losing to Virginia Tech at home. However, coach Tommy Bowden will find some way to finish 7-5 and hope it's enough to save his job for another season."

C'mon guys! Prove 'em wrong! Go get an ACC title!
