My son was at orientation last week. His name is Bowen, and I knew that he was a 5th generation Tiger on his mother's side. While he was there, I started thinking about Bowen Hall, a residence hall on the quad, and wondered who it was named for. So I googled it.
In his will which provided for the establishment of Clemson University, Thomas Green Clemson named seven individuals who he wanted to have a meeting shortly after his death to get organized. These men met under the oak trees at Fort Hill, and that first meeting was chaired by Robert Esli Bowen, my son's first cousin 5x removed.
They established the BOT at that meeting, and named another chair, but R. E. Bowen stayed on the BOT and served for several years. There is a historic marker on the grounds of Fort Hill describing this, and a portrait of R. e. Bowen hangs in Sikes Hall.
