DBs 40 yard dash times

Mark Fields posted this on his instagram last night. Incase you don't know how fast that is, Tankersly ran a 4.4 and was the 5th fastest DB at the combine this year. I know you don't play football in shorts like they run their 40 times, but it's looking like bodies will be flying in the secondary.

Fully trust the coaches, but wouldn't it be fun to see Mark Fields returning punts? He always was getting into it with people on kickoff coverage, so I can just imagine the confidence he would bring to the return game.
Go Tigers!

Can't compare these to combine numbers. The combine uses

electronic timing which is always slower. Tanks 4.40 at the combine would've been in the 4.25 range hand timed.

Do we know that these are hand timed?

We certainly have the money to have an electronic timing system of our own. Also disagree with the 4.40 electronic timed = 4.25 hand timed. It's true that hand timed 40s have a margin of error, but it varies to much to put a blanket .15 addition on everyone's time. It's one way to estimate, but not much better than just a hand time. With times this fast, how do we know that it wasn't .15 margin of error for Fields, but .10 for Mullen? That would change the order up from how it's posted.
Given these inaccuracies I really think that our program would be on to electronic timing by now.

Actually its closer to .2 seconds. Anyone running a sub 4.5 combine time is FAST!

how it might compare to a laser time 40. It could be .1 or .2 or whatever.

Hand times are very inconsistent. You can as between .01 and .02 for each of those times. Still very fast times.

Still cruising either way. You add .2 to all those times and they'd still be pretty dang impressive especially since Mullen is a 6'3" corner and Simmons is a 225 lb safety. Hell, if you add .2 to Simmons' time he'd still be the 5th fastest safety at the 2017 Combine.

I wonder about Muse's time and 4.31 for Simmons is FAST for a man that big.
6'3" and 220

Fields was the "Fastest man" at The Opening in HS

They laser time there and he ran in the mid to low 4.3s. You guys are being too technical when you say you have to add a .1 or .2 to hand times. Hand times are not a 100% accurate, but it's not far fetched that he really runs that time now.
TJ Green ran a 4.3 at the combine. You never heard that he ran a 4.1 while at Clemson. Really it all depends on who's handling the stopwatch.

at the combine...Same track, same timer, same stance...Combine times are legit, anything else is just a guess

Add .22 to a hand held time
Jul 20, 2017, 5:50 PM
|

I have worked several combines and the guys that set up the electronic equipment (one was the manufacturers rep and the other guy was the technical director) told us there is a .22 difference. Thus, a 4.50 hand timed would be a 4.72 electronically timed.
