I think in the 1970's, the purple was used less...

Jun 25, 2017, 3:46 PM

in football around the Hootie Ingram / Red Parker era starting in 1972, with the introduction of the white, now iconic Tiger Paw logo, maybe in athletics in general (kind of turned to a navy blue in basketball in the 1980's), but appeared again later on academic stationary.

One might remember that the donor athletic paper was named the Orange and White during that period. Most people seemed to like that better. When I was a kid, I don't remember the North and the South Stands yelling "Orange" and "Regalia" back and forth. *L*

However, I do remember around the time of the Clemson Centennial in 1989 that the president at the time Max Lennon, unveiled a new banner similar to this one:

http://clemson.bncollege.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/18x24_Rafter_Banner/ProductDisplay?parentCatId=40364&imageId=980446&level=&graphicId=RV150818&categoryId=40414&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&storeId=13558&productId=400000085667&topCatId=40350

It brought back the purple briefly, as did the athletic department during the Tommy Bowden era, in the early 2000's with purple unis and pants. Don't really miss the purple pants as I recall.

The Navy blue phase was a dark time

Jun 25, 2017, 3:50 PM

90s was it? I remember the paw on Jervey was outlined in navy blue until maybe the mid 2000s

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

*L* I think the navy was used more in other sports,

Jun 25, 2017, 4:04 PM

maybe away uniforms? I know the block C baseball cap often worn by Danny Ford looked like it had a navy blue outline perhaps? I had one and it looked navy around the edge.

Well, I guess part the 1990's was a kind of a dark time, especially in football. *LOL* That was the Barnes era in basketball though.

Remember the Russell jerseys? Yikes.***

I'm not sure I knew purple was a school color

Jun 25, 2017, 4:14 PM

when I was a student from '85-'89. I believe I thought our school colors were orange and white. Navy blue was added it too.

Maybe not on uniforms but for Clemson, gear in bookstore, Knickerbockers, etc...lots of Navy.

And it was a dark time for clothing, pun intended.

These days I think regalia/purple is bad @ss, and we shoukd have some bold striping on our football uniforms.

I have a 1974 pamphlet that says "students to wear the school colors of orange and white and purple to the games"... but it seems orange and white were the main colors, like they are now... look at the size of that tiger paw on that helmet!

The purple was brought back during the Hatfield era, not Bowden

Jun 25, 2017, 4:29 PM

We used the purple jerseys during the 1991 NC state game and the citrus bowl that year against Cal.

I still have a #24 "Terry Smith" purple jersey

Jun 25, 2017, 7:08 PM

somewhere

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You are correct. I had forgotten about that Citrus Bowl

Jun 25, 2017, 7:59 PM [ in reply to The purple was brought back during the Hatfield era, not Bowden ]

The purple unis had white paws on the shoulder pads like the orange ones, and white pants.
I guess we just saw the purple more under Bowden.

And ouch, Clemson got throttled by Cal in that game.

I guess my point was the purple disappeared mainly because of the white paw. I had put that together looking at the '72 photos. I think more white was to further accent the new logo.
