Three Tigers Named All-American by GCAA

Clemson, S.C.—Doc Redman, Bryson Nimmer and Carson Young were all named to the Golf Coaches Association of America All-American team on Thursday. Redman was named to the third team, while Nimmer and Young were honorable mention selections.

Clemson joined Oregon, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Southern California, Texas, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma as programs that had at least three All-America selections. It is the first time since the 2003 National Championship season that Clemson has had three players named to the GCAA All-America team.

Redman, a native from Raleigh, N.C., is the first Clemson freshman to make an All-America team since Kyle Stanley was a first-team selection in 2007. D.J. Trahan (2000, honorable mention) and Danny Ellis (1990, honorable mention) are the only other freshmen in Clemson history to make the GCAA All-American team.

Redman finished the 2016-17 season wit ha 70.77 stroke average, second in school history to Trahan’s 70.33 in 2001-02, and had eight top 10 finishes in 13 tournaments, tied for third in school history. He became the first freshman to win two tournaments in the same year, and tied the school record for rounds in the 60s by a freshman with 11.

Young and Nimmer were separated by just two total strokes this year in 39 rounds. Young finished with a 71.28 stroke average and had five top 10 finishes, while Nimmer had a 71.33 average with seven top 10 finishes. Young won the Furman Invitational in March, while Nimmer was tied for first at the end of regulation play at the ACC Tournament before losing in a playoff. He was also Clemson’s top player at the NCAA Regional at the Grove in College Grove, Tenn.

The Clemson team won a record tying six tournaments this year and had three other second-place finishes.
