"It's not the heat. It's the humidity"

I hear this thrown around all the time by people who live in the south, proud of their humidity. Or "yeah but it's a dry heat" as if somehow that makes it better.
Last few days here in southern Utah have been 110-115. It's a dry brutal heat. It's different than humidity for sure. You don't sweat as much. In fact there's no liquid at all. The heat goes straight to your head, making you lightheaded and you don't even sweat much to relieve yourself. It feels like being in an oven pressing all around you. You really feel the rays of the sun on you beating down. In some ways it's worse than humidity. It also makes any car in sunlight a complete pressure cooker

That settles it, you will be forced to move to Clemson. When it's too hot just jump in the lake or take a few minutes drive to the nearby mountains. You don't have any choice..

Obviously you know nothing about Clemson. The Blue Ridge mtns are just a few minutes drive away. Hop right up to Highlands, NC and there's an immediate temperature drop of 10 degrees or more.

Where the Blue Ridge yawns its greatness, Where the Tigers play, Here the sons of dear old Clemson Reign supreme alway.
CHORUS Dear old Clemson we will triumph, And with all our might, That the Tiger's roar may echo O'er the mountain height.
We will dream of greater conquests For our past is grand. And her sons have fought and conquered Every foreign land.
Where the mountains smile in grandeur O'er the hill and dale, Here the Tiger lair is nestling Swept by storm and gale.
We are brothers strong in manhood, For we work and strive. And our Alma Mater reigneth Ever in our lives.

Solely temp drop doesn't determine if they are mountains or not. Those are definitely mountains in Highlands/Cashiers, Whiteside and such.

how I loved the humidity, the green, the bugs, and the good people and you said most of those were things you didn't like. You liked the cool evenings and the dry heat. So I'm confused. Its 112, dry, and everything is dead at my house in the Sierra Nevada foothills. I spent the day in the attic yesterday to boot. Its fn hot. I miss the humidity. You can be outaide and it helps regulate your body's cooling. Its also what helps give the south its lush green. This dry heat is for the birds.. its near impossible to exercise outside. So yep, I agree.. its hot. But I also know what I like and where I stand.. you just seem discontent with it all. And yes, there are mountains within a short drive of Clemson. They are the oldest range on the planet and they are beautiful.

Back in SC the temp here they say something dismissive about the dry heat like it's nothing.
Also i used to spend summer with my grandparents who lived south of New Orleans and there was not 1 good thing about the humidity there. You must be thinking of upstate SC light humidity, because nobody in south Louisiana even steps outside in summer unless it's to stand in front of a hose.
One thing I don't miss is the bugs. I can go on walks here without having to deal with them. I remember taking a walk around a lake in Minnesota last June and I was practically choking on and being blinded by gnats. No such issues here. And when the sun starts to set things do get significantly cooler. It humid areas sometimes you sweat the most in evening or morning. But sunsets here are very pleasant not to mention a lot more beautiful with the wide open spaces and mountains.

Alls I know is, if it's gonna be say 95 degrees I'd rather it be 95 with no humidity than 95 and high humidity. Of course a dry 115 feels just as bad as 95 humidity...those are both like the extremes of each. BUT imagine 115 WITH humidity...that would be killer.

You are sweating
Jun 21, 2017, 11:16 PM

but is evaporating rather than being soaked into your clothes like somewhere with high humidity. The need to stay hydrated it critical. Drink lots of water, sports drinks, etc. It is much like high altitude in Colorado. You don't get as hot because of the altitude, but 90% of "altitude sickness" is dehydration.

I see OP's point and others. People with breathing problems have said that moving to dryer air is better on the lungs. However, high humidity can change a person's breathing but staying hydrated is the most important thing. Seems to me that whether you live in the south east or out west, staying hydrated is key, hot is hot. Humidity just brings the sticky with it for most people that aren't used to it.
I lived in the Panhandle for 2 years, in July you walk outside and you are sweating in 7 seconds and doesn't stop. Upstate SC is not as bad but still, very hot and humid to blast the AC. Stay cool & Hang in there.

but that is something else thats better for me personally about the west. When I lived in SC I would wake up with headaches, stuffed up nose, can't open my eyes etc. thanks to allergies. I have not had that issue one bit in Utah (idiot have the issue in Texas or North Dakota either). When I went home to SC to visit in May those terrible allergic reactions came back, I was feeling the affects all day.

not true for me. I have to go to Colorado (Colorado Springs and Pueblo) and Utah (Tooele) a lot all different times of the year. The lack of humidity kills my sinuses. In less than a day in that dryness my sinuses are completely plugged with dried blood from being so dry. It's miserable and takes me days to get over when I return to SC.

First, please step off your high horse. Second, I'd like to introduce you to a concept called the "heat index". Yes, you have hot temps in Utah (not hot, #### hot), but pretending like you're some martyr because the thermometer reads 3 digits is dumb.
This is a chart.
For the little town in south Utah I looked up, it's going to be 105 with ~15% humidity tomorrow. Per the chart, it will FEEL like 102 degrees. Yes that sucks, and yes it's hot. In Greenville on Friday (sorry, can't count tomorrow because of the hurricane coming through) it's going to be 89 degrees with an expected humidity of ~70%. It will FEEL like 103 degrees. Guess what, it feels just as hot as where you live, and it's only 89 degrees!
Later this summer, when it's 98F and 60% humidity (ie, July-August), it will feel like it's over 120 degrees. So when people say "it's not the heat, it's the humidity", that's likely what they mean.

I prefer the humid heat, myself. Being from the SE I am use to it more. The dry heat is like being in an oven, imo, it causes me to have short breathes and a bit of a panic feeling in those shorter breaths.
Also, I had more problems with congestion out West. Despite hearing how it was "better" for people who have lung issues. The dry air kept me from being able to get stuff up out of my lungs. I worked at Yellowstone and could not take long steamy hot showers, nor did I have the option of a humidifier in those old ranger station dorms.

Jun 22, 2017, 7:04 AM

But I've been in Tucson when it approached 100 and it felt great to me. Personally I'll take the dry heat until proven otherwise. I've spent days outside in Charleston in the 99+ degree, 99% humidity and it's miserable. Sweating in that weather does nothing to help lower your body temperature because it can't evaporate.

In a dry heat, if you get in the shade, there is a huge temperature difference. With high humidity... shade just makes it a little less brighter with the same muggy hard to breathe oppresive beat down of heat.

Stay indoors. Seriously. That heat is dangerous. Don't go in a swimming pool, either, it's worse. I went to Phoenix when it was 106 and noticed the pools were empty during the day, and didn't quite get it till I went in one. Everybody would go in 'em at night only.

Re: "It's not the heat. It's the humidity"

I've only been to Utah once - SLC in the dead of July. I think it was in the mid-90s on the thermometer. I took a walk from downtown up to the capitol building and was soaked by the time I got there. Yes, it's an all-uphill climb, but heat is heat and I don't care how it "feels." I checked the temperatures later that winter and saw the highs were in the 20s. To each his own, but no thanks for that type of climate for me. It is a truly beautiful setting though and I enjoyed it.
Singapore is probably the most humid place I've been to. You're guaranteed to need a change of clothes after any sort of walk. It's such a cool place that I didn't care.
The Australian sun is the real #######. You don't even feel hot, but I guess with the hole in the ozone layer, you're baked red in 20 minutes. I learned the hard way. Don't mess around down there.

That's one thing about the USA. Yeah it's hot as hell in Arizona and Florida in summer but we can easily go to powerfully air conditioned buildings so it's easy to avoid the heat most of the day.
I was in Italy a couple summers ago and even though it wasn't as hot temperature wise it was more unbearable because they don't have AC hardy anywhere and the buildings are not designed to be cool. There's no escape. Sleeping was a nightmare, had to have multiple fans pointed directly at me.
