California’s Single-Payer Health Care Plan

On Monday, state lawmakers in Sacramento got their first look at the price tag for the proposal, which rings in at a whopping $400 billion annually.
That means that implementing a single-payer health care system would require doubling (at least) the state's current tax burden.
"Needless to say, doubling California's tax burden would give them the highest taxes in the country by far," Joe Henchman, vice president of state projects for the Tax Foundation, told Reason on Tuesday.
The proposal "will cost employers and taxpayers billions of dollars and result in significant loss of jobs in the state," warns the California Chamber of Commerce.
The latest stop on this magical mystery tour of progressive health care plans is California, where U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) has been campaigning on behalf of a proposed state-run single-payer system.

Single Payer is a great idea! Really, if you care about people, you HAVE to do it. Stop waiting for the rest of the country to catch-up to your brilliance! SHOW US how much smarter you are! PLEASE create a single-payer tax system in your state!

It wouldn't be long until they started torturing doctors, hospitals and nurses to work for wages. The rest of the country would benefit.

Wonder if they were planning to do anything to control cost?

One reason single payer in other countries is more affordable than what we have is because they negotiate better prices for drugs. Used to be that federal law prohibited Medicaid and Medicare from negotiating better prices. That may still be the law. Not sure. But just forking over what the drug companies ask, as we still do for the most part, means we pay a lot more.

There seems to be some price checking with medicare but I can't say if this is not just the way it appears. Perhaps they are just shopping for lower prices and not negotiating anything.
Drugs are not the real problem. That's long and complicated and has to do with those without insurance or money to pay getting services and those who have cash and insurance paying for them. There's much, much more than that I'm sure.

Would like to see a breakdown of how much Americans spend on each part of healthcare compared to other countries. Not sure what part of it makes healthcare in this country much more expensive. Doctors? Medicine? Hospital facilities? Tests? Frequency of getting care? We may pay more because of a combination of factors. Not sure.
I know people without insurance means the rest of us pay more. The cost has to be covered.

Those who don't have insurance to cover doctor's visits just wait in the emergency room. I'm not saying I didn't make a few middle of the night trips to Emergency when my children were young. We had an old doctor in Easley named Welborn. When I was in school and had no insurance he would treat several of my children for the cost of one visit and give the 'samples,' of new meds free. If I didn't have the cash to pay his office would send me the bill and to my knowledge I don't owe him a penny now.
You don't get that anymore. You pay up front at the doctor's office or you don't get treated. The hospitals never send anyone away.
I'm afraid with single payer we will have to control medical cost. I don't like the idea of government exercising control over our medicine. They might force the medical institutions to lower cost too much and ruin the business or they might let the cost rise and over tax the working Americans. That's the more likely thing to happen, imo.
