Correct me if I'm wrong, the rock came along because a PC coach had already called it Death Valley.
#7 on the list for those interested.
It's ESPN, so I guess we can "consider the source".

I've always heard the story as you noted from PC coach after taking losses like 70-0, etc.

What Hale wrote doesn't completely go against what you said.

He says ... "The nickname "Death Valley" for Memorial Stadium is partially derived from the state park, and a rock from the real Death Valley, given to legendary coach Frank Howard, now stands as one of the most famous college football monuments. But the name also stems from Woodland Cemetery, a faculty graveyard opened in 1924 next to the stadium and the Calhoun Family plots. Furthering the motif, Clemson now has a faux graveyard next to its practice facility, with gravestones marking road wins over top-25 opponents. -- Hale"

I think this is more what he meant with first sentence as it should be two separate thoughts ... The nickname "Death Valley" for Memorial Stadium is partially derived from the state park. A rock from the real Death Valley, given to legendary coach Frank Howard, now stands as one of the most famous college football monuments.
