And still the youngest HC to win a Football Natty, at 33 I believe.

If that age is true, then he was 30 when he took down Buckies & Woody in his 1st game.

When did Pell leave?

Bill is correct

Danny is still the youngest to win a national championship (33). And, he did coach the Tigers to that win over OSU and Hayes. Charley Pell left after the regular season that year.

Danny built some really good teams in the 80's. Also, since he took over at the end of 1978, I believe he was responsible for a large number of the players on the 1981 team, and probably recruited plenty during the Pell years.

If you can find the clip of Danny telling the story from his perspective of the lead up to the OSU game and the events following Hayes's punch it is well worth a listen. Talks about how he handled the cowardly refs who were intimidated by Hayes. Can't remember where I heard it several years ago but he has probably told it many times. If anyone has a link I wouldn't mind hearing it again and playing it for the kids.
