How much does home field advantage matter in baseball?

Mar 24, 2017, 4:30 PM

We don't seem to have a problem, so far, with playing outside the confines of Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Looks like we got Florida State away starting on April 15-17. That will be a tester. Will our baseball team be tested until then? Is VT any good at Baseball?

VT is better than ND and BC, they will be a scrappy bunch and it won't be easy.

In the case of BC

it's limited strictly to familiarity with the park. Which is of little benefit

Honestly, I don't think that home field matters if the away team believes they can win any where. That relates to the confidence they have in them selves and their team mates!!!

I think two things. Outfielders are familiar with the slope

when going deep near the fence. Home team gets last bat.

It matters a little in the early and late innings

Mar 24, 2017, 5:49 PM

in the early innings, when the muscle flexing is going on - to see who can get in the first punch. It helps in the late innings when the home team is down by a couple of runs. The reality that you'll lose if you don't tighten up and score some runs does focus the mind a bit. Sometimes that's enough to generate some adrenaline and gain a little more energy, quickness and eye focus, which can lead to a couple of runs. If that happens, it can cause the opposite effect on the opponent and be demoralizing, causing the opponent to fall apart, allowing the home team to make up more than a couple of runs. But first, for the home field to matter, you have to have players who really, really hate to lose.

Mainly the turf. Louisville, for example, has

some really slow astroturf and can kill you on little bunts and such.

It's not like basketball or football though.
