strange doings at UGA

Feb 23, 2017, 8:29 PM

best wishes to this kid...

According to an Athens, Ga. police report, Georgia defensive tackle Trenton Thompson had to be taken to the hospital on Wednesday evening after Thompson was found incoherently wandering in a roadway.

Thompson was later released from the hospital on Thursday morning, and the University of Georgia Athletics Association has since released a statement, saying that Thompson is experiencing a medical issue and that he has withdrawn from classes for the semester.

“Based upon recent events, Trenton Thompson’s family has authorized UGAAA to release the following information. Trenton has been dealing with a significant medical issue which required emergency hospitalization and extended hospital stay. Trenton was recently discharged from the hospital and remains under close medical care. With respect to last night’s incident, the physical appearance and behavior described in the UGA PD report is solely related to an adverse reaction to medications prescribed specifically for his medical condition. The adverse reaction required emergency transport to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released. Toxicology tests performed at the hospital were negative for OxyContin. We cannot release any further information at this time due to federal privacy laws. Due to the medical issues, Trenton is withdrawing from classes this semester, and his family requests privacy during this time.”

Thompson is one of the top defensive players for the Bulldogs, as he was the team’s third-leading tackler with 56 total tackles in 2016. The sophomore defensive tackle also 9.5 tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks on the season.

Thompson, a former five-star, was the No. 1 overall recruit of the 2015 class.

Georgia defensive tackle Trenton Thompson is withdrawing from classes for the spring semester after being released from a hospital Thusday morning. University police called for emergency personnel after an early morning incident involving Thompson.

A University of Georgia police officer spotted Thompson Thursday at 1:14 a.m. “wandering on the roadway” at the intersection of River Road and East Carlton Street near a dining hall, according to a police incident report. He told police later he had taken “two oxies.”

Thompson, a rising junior from Albany, was named most valuable player in Georgia’s Liberty Bowl victory. He was the team’s third leading tackler last season and shared the team lead in sacks.

“Based upon recent events, Trenton Thompson’s family has authorized UGAAA to release the following information,” Georgia said in a statement. “Trenton has been dealing with a significant medical issue which required emergency hospitalization and extended hospital stay. Trenton was recently discharged from the hospital and remains under close medical care.”

The UGA police officer asked Thompson if he was OK after arriving on the scene and Thompson attempted to open the patrol vehicle passenger side door and was told to stop.

“Thompson appeared very unsteady on his feet, and his eyes were very bloodshot,” the report said. His eyes were described as glassy with burst capillaries.

He provided his name and date of birth and that he was a UGA student, the report said.

Thompson tried to walk away at several times. He was asked if he has alcohol or taking medicatons and said no.

He did not give indication how he was feeling and EMS was envetually called because he was “behaving incohenretly, and appeared to be experiencing some kind of medical problem.”

A police lieutenant arrived and asked Thompson if he was a UGA athlete. He indciated he played football, but did not recall what position, the report said. An athletic department staff member was contacted about Thompson. A police sergeant who arrived on the scene asked Thompson what medications he had taken. Thompson eventually stated he had taken “two oxies.” He was asked if he had been hit on the head recently and Thompson didn’t answer.

When EMS arrived on the scene to evaluate Thompson, he said he wanted to go to the hospital. He was transported to Athens Regional Medical Center at 1:40 a.m.

He was released from the hospital Thursday morning, Atlanta’s WSB-TV reported.

“(Trenton’s) going to be OK,” his brother told the station.

The UGA statement continued: “With respect to last night’s incident, the physical appearance and behavior described in the UGA PD report is solely related to an adverse reaction to medications prescribed specifically for his medical condition.
