Most underrated recruit that turned in to a 5 star player?

Feb 22, 2017, 1:30 AM

Thought this would be a better alternative to the "most overrated player" thread.

So, obviously Hunter Renfrow comes to mind first. He would probably be at the top of any list. But that's too obvious. Who else would be on the list?

Can be come up with a player for each position?

Kirkland and Dawkins were both very undervalued and turned into awesome NFL players.

Pretty sure David Treadwell was a walkon...

He was absolutely clutch in the late 80's @ FG kicker

Grady Jarrett
Adam Humphries
Tyler Grisham - On a side note, did anybody know that Grisham is actually an offensive analyst for us?

I had no idea Grisham was on staff. He was very similar to Hunter, had great hands and a knack for getting open.

Gaines Adams. 2-star per Scout, played 8-man football

Feb 22, 2017, 4:47 AM

in HS. Unanimous 1st team AA at Clemson, 4th overall draft pick.

I second .
Gaines was terrific after the light came on in his junior season .
The " bumpsnag 6 " against Wake in Winston-Salem is a great memory .

Vic came in as a RB and then TE before moving to DE.

Feb 22, 2017, 6:56 AM

But Dabo AND Danny Ford were both unknowns (unproven) outside of the CUAD at the time(s) of their 'selections'.

undersized for a nose guard but look up his credentials. All-American.
On a personal note he absolutely blew me up on a pass coming out of the backfield in Jr. High. I caught the ball and "Boom!!!". I was layed out, ball was flying in the air.

Leggett was/is VERY under rated IMO!!! His offer list was Clemson, Central Florida, South Florida, Louisville, FAU, and Missouri. Talking about an under rated player/recruit, Jordan Leggett was just that!!!

Feb 22, 2017, 3:35 PM

Both Rivals and 247 had him a 3-star and Rivals said he was only the #13 ranked center in the nation.

https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/33444

Honestly, I had trouble coming up with a viable choice at center.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You have Keith Adam's in there...

Feb 22, 2017, 7:00 PM [ in reply to Heres a shot at each position ... ]

That was going to be my input. I agree that Jay G. Doesn't count for this tho. He was highly rated and basically met expectations.

Guilermmos rankings out of HS were all over the place (Rivals said #13 While ESPN said # 1) but I basically agree that he met expectations. I really can't come up with a good example at the center position.

Re: Most underrated recruit that turned in to a 5 star player?

Feb 22, 2017, 6:53 PM

QB - Charlie Whitehurst, came in as a 3-star, still plays in NFL.
RB - Wayne Gallman, came in as a 3-star per most services, converted from high school LB and Wing-T wingback, will end up drafted.
WR - Aaron Kelly - came in as a 2-star, stills owns a bunch of Clemson's passing records.
WR2 - Hunter Renfrow - when a former walk-on roasts Alabama in two straight national title games for 17 catches and 4 TD's and wins a nattie with a TD reception with one second remaining, people will remember you.
TE - Michael Palmer - came in as a 2-star in 2005, still owns some TE records for Clemson.
OT - Barry Richardson - not sure how, but he came in as a 2-star in 2004.
OT2 - Chris Hairston - came in as a 2-star, got bumped to low-end 3 per most services, still plays in the NFL.
OG - Nathan Bennett - came in as a 2-star in '02, was one of the more dominant guards we've had.
OG - Roman Fry - came in as a low 3-star in '02 (slightly higher than Bennett), like Bennett anchored one of our better O-lines in recent memory.
C - Tommy Sharpe - former 250-pound walk-on who really bailed Clemson out in 2002 by grabbing a starting job when a plague of injuries knocked down most of our OL.
DE - Gaines Adams - 2-star who played 8-man football, ended up drafted 4th overall.
DE2 - Andre Branch - another two-star who played his way to the NFL.
DT - Grady Jarrett - low-end-3-star at best per most services, just ended up sacking Tom Brady three times in the last Super Bowl.
LB - Kavell Conner - 2 star who was one of former DC John Lovett's notorious unauthorized offers. Most whiffed gloriously; Conner actually played his way into the NFL.
LB2 - Kendall Joseph - Who realizes Joseph was just a low-end 3-star from Belton? Guy stood out in the middle on a national title defense, which ain't nothin'.
CB - Coty Sensebaugh. Think everybody called this one. Former 2-star, last-second offer. Usually you get a warm body, offering on Signing Day. We got a future NFL player.
CB2 - Cordrea Tankersely - came in as a 3-star, has a chance at being a 1st-rounder. Not a bad return.

If I remember correctly correctly Barry Richardson randomly graduated a year early so he hadn't even been rated yet. (It was something bizarre like that)

Gaines Adams is really the correct answer.

Tankersly was a 4 star on 247 (not composite but their actual ratings) and Scout. Leggett was also a 4 star on Scout\Espn. Not sure either should be included in the thread.

If you're looking at body of work & impact on the program, it would be hard to any name that resonates more than Hunter Renfrow, no? This guy went from walk-on, to scholarship, to national champion, to having a hometown high school & street named after him in 2 years!
