So, we've all talked about "SEC bias", or "the ACC gets no respect", etc. I decided to compare the pre and post season AP rankings of the Power 5 conferences for 2015 and 2016 seasons to see if there truly was anything to that.
Methodology: The preseason AP ranking was subtracted from the postseason ranking for each team, and the totals were summed for each conference. Any team that was not ranked in the top 25 was ranked according to the "Also receiving votes list" on the ESPN page. Any team not even on that list was arbitrarily assigned a ranking of 40. For example: In 2015, Clemson was 12 in the preseason and 2 in the postseason resulting in a 10 point under ranking or -10; this year FSU was ranked 4 in preseason and 8 in postseason meaning they were over ranked by 4 or +4. Adding these results for all of the teams in each conference, and ignoring teams not ranked in either of the pre or postseason polls, we get the following total Over (+) or Under (-) Rankings for the five conferences:
It seems pretty obvious to me that the SEC hype at the beginning of the season just doesn't bear fruit when all is said and done. Incidentally, 2015's over ranking of the ACC can be laid completely at the feet of Ga Tech's utter collapse.
