Deshaun Watson Draft Perspective

Dec 9, 2016, 9:28 PM

Looking for Watson to finish his Clemson Tiger career with two big-time low turnover games. That said, I hope for him he does not get picked by the dreadful Cleveland Browns. And Chicago, San Fran, Buffalo and Jets may be a step up but not ideal. It's too much to ask for Watson to fall into a sweet spot like Dak Prescott who IMHO is the biggest NFL QB surprise in decades. All that said, there is value to Deshaun to end up in Miami, Houston, KC, Minnesota, or Arizona sitting a season, half a season or two seasons. And sitting behind a fading Drew Brees or aging Eli Manning, Ben Roethlisberger or even Tom Terrific could bring long-term value as their heir apparent.

Regardless of what Kiper believes today, or how he changes his mind over the six weeks, Watson's future is very bright with the right NFL OC and QB coach. Go Watson! Go Tigers!

I can think of better QB surprises than Prescott.

Russell Wilson, Tom Brady, Drew Brees just for starters.

They are some great ones ... no doubt

Wilson is a great example. Tom and Drew came on a little slower in rookie and early years from my recollection (due to Bledsoe being established and Rivers being wanted by Chargers more than Brees), but Watson would do well to emulate any of their careers. The guys you mention have all demonstrated tremendous football IQ and work ethic. Hope it will be same for Watson.

Cleveland will not go for a quarterback with the first pick. The top 7 or 8 teams will look to boost their defense and their WR corps. I think DW will fall down in the draft not because he isn't the best quarterback available, but go to a team that is already good and looking to restock behind an aging quarterback, I.e. Brady, Roth, Cutler, Rivers, Ryan, etc. If Atlanta were able to pick him up, that would be the best of all worlds for DW and that team. I'm a charger fan and would love to see him play for San Diego, but Atlanta would be the best situation, IMHO.
