Many of you know Trent Allen with Allen's Creations. This is

a repost of a post which his wife, Ginger, made relating the events of her father and his first cousin 75 years ago today. I felt like the members of Tnet would very much enjoy it and I hope Ginger does not mind. Great men are in short order these days! So, I think I will risk it...

From Ginger:

My dad 's first cousin, Harold Monteith, was on board the USS
California in Pearl Harbor on this morning 75 years ago. A few days
later, his mom, Sally, received a telegram saying he was missing and
presumed dead. The family grieved for several weeks and then Aunt
Sally received another telegram saying that he was alive. The USS
California was salvaged and returned to the war with Harold aboard.
My dad entered the Navy in 1943 and was sent aboard the USS Alcyone to
the Pacific. Right before the Battle of Leyte Gulf, he found out that
the USS California was among the ships waiting with his ship to
participate in the battle. He told his captain about Harold and how
the family had been told he was dead and that no one in the family had
gotten to see him since they heard he was alive. So the Captain did
the unthinkable in wartime and ordered a crewman and a dinghy to take
my dad over to see Harold on his ship. Harold told my dad that when
the Pearl Harbor attack happened, he was thrown into the water and he
was able to swim to the dock, but as soon as he set foot on land, an
officer gave him a gun and told him to go to a set point across the
island to be ready for the Japanese to invade. This caused him to not
be counted as a survivor right away. Harold survived the war and
served in the Navy for many years. He is buried at Arlington National
Cemetery. A few years ago, we took Daddy to D.C. and he and I braved
a rainstorm to find Harold's grave.

Thanks for sharing, we have our freedom because of real heroes like this. I'm so greatful for every serviceman that served for me and my family.

I thank God for blessing them and helping all them to be heroes for the following generations.

We all should honor these men and their families and go out of our way to let them know verbally an in acts of kindness.

Thank you for sharing! Go freedom continue on!

Go Tigers!

Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful bit of history! The bravery of so many continues to amaze and remind us all how very much we owe them our gratitude. One of my greatest memories is visiting the Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor. The attack was just something I learned about in history until I watched oil still rising from the surface from the Arizona. Those little droplets of oil gave me a whole new perspective. If you ever get the opportunity, go visit the Memorial. And from the bottom of my heart, thank you to all those, past and present, that serve to keep us safe and free. God bless, and Go Tigers!
