Opening Week Is The Great Equalizer

Aug 25, 2016, 4:48 AM

I've always thought opening week is the great equalizer between college football teams.

Week 1 is an underdog's best Vitamin D.

Mainly because teams can spend the off season redefining themselves into something different than their opponent watched on film.

Opening week tends to have situations where big mistakes in assignment happen...allowing for big plays which could benefit the underdog.

Extra prep time for a specific opponent is available in Week 1.

Teams seem not play their best...which could make a great team only good in Week 1.

Home crowds tend to be packed to the gills and very energetic because optimism from players to fans is at an all time high of the season.

Week 1 is the great equalizer.

I think we have our hands full on the Plains in 8 days.

Maybe that's just me.

A prime example of this was the gamecocks beating UNC last year

Couldn't agree more. Too many fans have already chalked up a W but thank goodness we have a coaching staff that understands the significance of this game. DW's hope for the Heisman and another run at the NC could slide right out the window in week one.

It wasn't a great equalizer the last time we played Alabama on week 1. It strongly favored the more prepared. I think that is us this year, they have so many inexperienced players on that team.
