Pass Interference calls on uncatchable balls

Jul 26, 2016, 11:34 PM

Is it me, or did the fact that a pass was uncatchable not mean much last year? I remember several instances where it happened to us last year, and watching these Top 25 games of 2015, we weren't alone. In fact, this is the first thing that popped up when i googled it:

The rule does state that the pass must be catchable......but that is in the opinon of the ref

but the rule says:

"If the pass is deemed to be "uncatchable", pass interference rules do not apply in American college football or the NFL, and starting with the 2010 season they do not apply in Canada. This rule does not apply in American high school football."

The "uncatchable" criterion is used less and less

I almost never see an official wave off a PI call anymore (in college or pros) due to uncatchable. It has to be blatantly uncatchable, practically thrown into the stands.

If the offense player had a couple of feets to go and to jump high, he might and just might had a chance ..

Yep. It isn't where the ball lands. It's whether or not the player would have had a play on the ball. A ball landing that close the player probably had a chance to get to it when the ball was higher in the air.

The thing I noticed was many more holding calls on the DB. The logic seemed to be that it the ball was uncatchable, it's because the DB was holding. There is also a movement to just get your eyes on the ball if you're a DB. Seemed like if your eyes were on the ball you could get away with murder, but if not- you were called for touching the WR.
