More Fun with Downtime! Wonkier and Wackier Than Ever!!!

Wanna take OOC games up a notch?

Last summer, I spent some sublime downtime looking at teams that had two-year Power 5 openings three years out (2018-2019) that wouldn't throw them into 11 or more Power 5 game status nor take away a 7th home game. [Note: This year TX, USC, UCLA, and Stanford all have 11 P5 teams on the sched]

Surprise. There were 22 solid contenders. Only three years out. Instead of trying to align individual leagues vs. each other like we can do in basketball, or scheduling eight years in advance hoping for a relevant face-off, if Power 5 schools were to simply throw in home and away openings in years ahead to a committee, tasked with assigning match-ups for the following year at the end of each season based on the home/away balance and competitive similarities, that could solve a lot of advance scheduling dilemmas.

The 22 teams available at the time, listed in order of past two-year records at the time...

Orgegon
Alabama
Louisville
Auburn
Wisconsin
South Carolina
Georgia Tech
Oklahoma State
Minnessota
Iowa
Boston College
Rutgers
Tennessee
Vanderbilt
Texas Tech
Oregon State
Florida
Syracuse
Kansas
Kentucky
Iowa State
Purdue

Were a committee to go into this and skew a little 1 vs. 4, 5 vs. 8 style seeding throughout, following the culmination of the 2017 season, CFP contenders would have legitimate and relative OOC games to go on the following year, with some committee influence on added relevance (history, obscurity, etc.) for fan and competitive support.

Legitimate home and away games, OOC, seeded for effectiveness and balance in weeding out the true contenders, while offering opportunities for statement games to the challengers. And it plays well with others.

While a year has passed and that list has changed some, you don't have to look more than three years out today to find enough programs to seed this type of arrangement.

home & away series for most of the teams...though I can't imagine ateam having an opening 3 years away and not 4.

teams to kick it off, and they're out there, that would likely be enough to create some trust and traction. Three years out produces quite the availability, and it only grows moreso beyond.

availability at the time.

This is a cool site for checking out what teams have what others lined up contractually in the years ahead...
