The ACC might be a better conference without

Jul 24, 2016, 7:43 AM

The pseudo-membership of Notre Dame, in my opinion. That said, IF(and this is a big IF) the ACC can enter into a similar agreement for the ACC network with ESPN and NBC(longtime sponsor of Notre Dame football) the ACC could see similar potential revenues to what is being projected for both BIg10/Fox and SEC/ CBS collaboration. Just early Sunday thoughts.

While the math of sharing funds is not always ideal, Notre Dame has enhanced the national status, visibility and presence of the conference. The ACC may chose to stay at fourteen full members, but Swofford isn't merely sitting still until 2019. He has moved the conference into a position of strength and stability despite the loss of Maryland.

I believe the presidents will watch surrounding conferences as GOR agreements end and decide who if any schools are worth pursuing. I also believe NBC will seek opportunity if ESPN falters. In other words a lot can still, AND WILL, happen. Patience has paid off thus far.
Maybe RAD can take Swofford's place!

It is refreshing to get a rational, intelligent, non-antagonistic response. You make great points and I agree. Thanks, enjoy your Sunday.

While I'm not a fan of Notre Dame,

Jul 24, 2016, 10:04 AM [ in reply to Re: The ACC might be a better conference without ]

they have probably played a big factor in the original GOR being signed, the extended GOR being signed, the larger payout in the last TV deal, the new payout bump, and getting the ACC Network itself. As we all know they are a member in all sports but football and play five games a year v ACC. Those five games fill stadium, bump ratings and give prestige. They actually field more ACC teams than we do, but we all know football is where the bread is buttered.

Perhaps someday Notre Dame will join in full, but I think they will have to be in a position where they have no choice. Their hand will have to be forced by the playoff situation and having a shot at the national championship. I don't understand and can't relate to their huge joy and pride in being independent. On the contrary, I think many years they are a complete afterthought to fans of teams in other conferences, including the ACC. But they definitely take pride and vow that that is something they will never want to give up. Even though they readily accept a conference is the way to go for all of their other teams. And let's face it they are getting more and more intertwined with ACC football everyday. They have a couple of financial deals tied in, bowls, and the conference schedules five of their games. You might say their prized independence is hanging by a thread now.

I would much rather Notre Dame be all in. As for the agreement, however, I think it is more than fair on both sides. They only get 1/20 of one share from the main television agreement because of non-membership in football. Regarding the Network, they get a full seat at the table. I think they probably deserve that. Every road game they play in vs. the ACC is open to being broadcast live by the network as well as being replayed over and over again. As someone said, I think they kill more than they eat here.

AS far as a 16th team goes, that will not happen until Notre Dame becomes a full member, and maybe not then. The only thing that I think makes the ACC invite a 16th team before that is if the BigTen and SEC start moving to 16 and the ACC gets jittery. The conference is no longer in danger of being poached, but we still wouldn't want to sit by and let the others get to 16 and have to just take a scrap leftover. The only power five schools that will be available for the BIG, SEC or ACC would be if the Big 12 breaks apart when their GOR expires and that is a distinct possibility. Rather than wait and take the leftover, the ACC may want to offer a team a bird in the hand vs. two in the bush with the Big and SEC.

A lot of people speculate that Oklahoma and Oklahoma State would be a possibility for PAc12, Big10 and SEC, Kansas a possibility to Big10 and Texas possibly to Big10 or ACC. Although it would be a huge money maker to get Texas, I have no desire to get them. They bring their own set of problems.
I would just as soon se the ACC get West Virginia and call it a day. That would be a great eastern seaboard conference with the best population and market footprint. A second choice to West Virginia would be Connecticut, but they are a distant second in my mind. I think we should have taken West Virginia when we got Pitt and Syracuse.

Much of the independent pride

come from being kept out of the Big 10 by Michigan years ago because of anti-Catholic bias. Their history of becoming more relevant, popular and winning more championships than Michigan tells it all.

Why would ND join our conference in football????

Jul 24, 2016, 3:08 PM

So they can have EQUAL revenue sharing with the likes of wake and BC? Until pay is performance/following driven, it makes more since for them to stay independent. Clemson, FSU and a couple other football schools in our conference ought to push for this.

Considering we just agreed with ESPN on a deal through

Jul 24, 2016, 4:51 PM

2035, this scenario is highly unlikely. That being said, if Disney/ABC/ESPN start to tank, our exposure now on NBC through our Notre Dame relationship is a positive if renegotiations should begin again for some reason.

Our current deal is worth more due to 2-3 games on ACC fields per annum, plus all of their other sports are under the ACC umbrella, with their national fan base to go with.

I just really like Notre Dame's national litmus test status as they are now. The ACC as a whole benefits from that, whereas elsewhere it's only individual teams.
