People aren't getting the LSU issue completely..

Feb 12, 2016, 11:08 PM

Believe they are saying without funds.... School shuts down. No school means no grade or "incomplete ratings" for grades which means no student, even student athletes are ncaa compliant. Ie, no football

In other words... Booster funding for football won't matter. Program will have money but no student athlete will have "grades" that make them eligible to do play their sport

great state of Louisiana: Almighty God, family and LSU football.

All things else pale into insignificance, including threats by any politician to mess with any of those three. Hence, the good folks of that state will continue to fill the churches, have Sunday dinners with their kin and fill DEAF Valley to the brim come football Saturdays. That's because in Louisiana, when there's a will, there's always going to be a way-wardness to grease palms, get rid of opposition and keep that Tiger football program alive and well! lol

Feb 13, 2016, 6:46 AM

they're scheduled since last years game was moved
because of the flooding. All's fair in love and war -
never really understood that saying btw and i may
be using it out of context.

It is not going to matter where it is played.

I agree with this. Thing is though

Feb 13, 2016, 6:47 AM

As a land grant school I am going to bet that, like In SC, state government cannot allow the school to stop research and extension activities. It is law. The school will remain open. Couple that with the millions upon millions in federal funding that the school receives and you quickly realize that someone, either at the school or State gov. level, is simply trying to push the envelope.

Yep, it's known as "The Washington Monument Ploy', when politicians threaten to shut down something that causes an outcry with the public, usually in a budget battle.

In the time-honored practices of graft, corruption nepotism

Feb 13, 2016, 8:27 AM [ in reply to I agree with this. Thing is though ]

fraud, embezzlement, etc, the state of Louisiana is galaxies ahead of South Carolina---and dating far back before the Kingfisher built that monstrosity of a building in Baton Rouge.....one former governor--Edwin Edwards--was imprisoned for the corruption surrounding the introduction of casinos to La....and then was RE-ELECTED after his jail term!!

I suspect that Bobby Jindal and his cronies were just playing politics the Louisiana Way (similar to the Carolina Way in college athletics has been exposed) and now the higher ed coffers are empty

Jindal cut funding for education to balance the budget

Feb 13, 2016, 11:18 AM

It had nothing to do with "The Louisiana Way." The Governor in LA now is John Bel Edwards. Name sound familiar?

Re: Jindal cut funding for education to balance the budget

Feb 13, 2016, 1:23 PM

budget cuts for higher ed aside, I think it would be naive to think there was no hanky panky going on in other parts of Louisiana's state gov't that necessitated the current funding crisis....for all we know, Jindal involvemment may have been totally that he inherited a huge sewage backup

But with oil, chemicals and tourism, one would think there'd be enough money coming into the state to avoid the headlines---and this may be a big scare tactic.

Did they really elect another member of the Edwards family??? Unbelievable....

Quick Edwards story---the wife and I were trying to wend our way past a gigantic crowd in front of a French Quarter hotel during Carnival many years ago.....the next morning, read in the Times-Picayune that the First Lady of Louisiana (Mrs. Governor Edwin Edwards) was in the middle of some women on a 3rd story balcony baring her upper torso for a few strands of beads.....ya gotta love that place!

Feb 13, 2016, 3:08 PM [ in reply to Jindal cut funding for education to balance the budget ]

education. Kind of funny at one time the Republicans were touting him the next big thing for them, then he drove the state of Louisiana into chaos to follow his unrealistic and harsh policies. Been down to Louisiana before, it's a nice place. Feel bad for the people living down there, having to deal with a system thrown into chaos.

Actually the two things not protected by the state constitution are health care and education so land grant doesn't matter in this case. They are trying of change that is what I've heard though.

a google search found that LSU had an endowment fund

Feb 13, 2016, 7:52 AM

of $568,000,000 as of 2013. Spend some of it guys.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They already use the endowment earnings

Feb 13, 2016, 3:02 PM

to fund things. Spend down the endowment and the earnings drop.
And parts are earmarked for specific things and can't be touched.

Re: People aren't getting the LSU issue completely..

Feb 13, 2016, 10:30 AM

It's not that they aren't getting state funds per say. It's that the state has said they are suspending payment on the tops scholarships. Tops is comparable to our life scholarships. The number I've heard is 70% of the students here are on it. If a university doesn't get 70% of its tuition payments it can't function.

2024 student level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They will never shut the school down and sends students home

This is just a shock tactic.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It doesn't matter, because it won't happen

Feb 13, 2016, 11:10 AM

This is just a typical tactic to get funding. You threaten to cut out essential services and the things people care about the most first so that there's a public outcry for more funding.

essentials, they threaten the most important things like education to shock/scare voters into accepting tax hikes. There's almost certainly many other ways to balance the budget, but no politician wants to start cutting funding because they will lose votes or political ties. The entire thing makes me sick.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's the problem with the policy of spend a lot and...

Feb 13, 2016, 3:13 PM

cut taxes at the same time. You can't keep on spending money you don't have. Just simple math, you can't increase or keep spending at the same levels when you have huge tax cuts.
