Ok football gurus. Would you rather

Oct 9, 2015, 11:07 PM

Have first and ten, or second and a foot?
I know there are other contributing factors, but for the sake of argument let's just say the score is about even, it's third quarter, and you are around midfield.

I ask this because I've seen this scenario often: the quarterback (or ball carrier) makes about a 10 yard gain on 1st down and is forced out of bounds at the marker. Would it be better to step out just before the marker or after it?

Discuss.

Second and a foot is essentially a free play...

...but then so is first and 10. Both scenarios are highly desirable especially stacked on top of each other. Both typically indicate you are moving the ball.

I would take many of each please.

Second and a foot. At mid field, it gives you tremendous play calling options.

I attempt 2 deep balls with 2nd and a foot, and QB sneak it on 4th down.

When do I get my steak knives?

What's frustrating is when the QB runs for 9 yds on 1st down

and slides when he could have dove for the first. Then
we don't get the 1st on the next two plays and then roll
a punt snap and end up losing a game we led by 10 with
about 2 minutes left (GT 2004). Which made you marvel
at how Boyd would pound it right up the middle on 3rd or
4th and 2 even when everyone was expecting it. Loved his
toughness. Watched him at the bowl game vs LSU take hit
after hit and keep getting up and his perseverance paid
off, though he was probably a little sore after the game.

You always want to move the chains when you can. However,

I love second and very short. It gives you a chance to take a shot.Especially in a tight game and you have a play you've been saving for just such a situation.
