Is this a style preference , or is there some functional reason for this ? I always hated to skin my knees .

It does give a tiny bit more mobility, but not worth the loss of protection. I am sure a helmet would feel real great on a bare knee cap.

Only running backs and quarterbacks wear full length pants with pads anymore. Its not a swag thing but a speed thing. Conrnerbacks need to be fast and they rarely get hit in the legs. All those bulky pads counterproductive.
