our state to have three Division 1 teams
Sep 2, 2015, 12:57 AM

Clemson and South Carolina have been the only division 1 schools in this state for as long as I've been alive. (Ok I know we are supposed to call them FBS schools but to me it will always be Div I) states like North Carolina and Texas has had multiple Div 1 teams. Now it seems a third school is joining Clemson & South Carolina as a big boy. Furman? No. SC STATE? No. Wofford? No again. It's Coastal Carolina. Any thoughts on this?

mentioned are at full capacity and are NOT growing schools. They are at the # of students that fits their economics. Clemson is not really getting bigger either. we are basically at the same size for years and years and years.
coastal is a new school

It sure seems like it's growing. Universities have way more money than they did 20-30 years ago. It is just a lot cushier these days. The new generation is much more entitled. Sure it's more expensive, but sign on the dotted line and Schools will find banks/feds to loan you a ton of cash to help finance themselves.

When I graduated in 1992 there were 16,000 grads and undergrads. My daughter is a Junior this year and there are a little over 20,000 total grads and undergrads.

My thought is that it hurts Carolina a lot more than it hurts us. Coastal is going to be a Sun Belt team for awhile, I think, but demographics - as you mentioned, there are now just three FBS programs in the state - favor them getting larger. A lot larger. The Low Counties are underserved as far as having a big public school like Clemson in the Upstate or USC in the Midlands and Coastal is filling that void...that school has grown like in a weed in the last 20 years or so.
Carolina has always had a big proximity edge to Clemson as far as recruiting the Low Counties...schools still overwhelmingly get their "core" guys from a 2-hour radius around the school. USC also had easier majors, more relaxed entrance standards, and city demographics favored getting Low County kids, where there is a lot of poverty and the schools are notoriously underfunded and a lot of kids fall through the cracks and don't wind up qualified for FBS/Division I. Again, Coastal fills a substantial void there.
Coastal won't get a lot of the kids that South Carolina offers, and certainly not at first, but they will trim them some around the edges.
It doesn't help them, regardless. And it pretty much has null value as far as Clemson goes...and probably effects us about as much as Georgia State or Georgia Southern - which are both substantially closer geographically - do.
Just not recruiting from the same pond.

are making the jump much quicker nowadays. Heck, Georgia State established their football program in 2010 and had moved up to FBS 2 years later. It's not Coastal's gonna be in a Power 5 conference or anything.

Rich coach, who is also COB of a brokerage, and wants to move up. Large and growing school (10k, around the same as Clemson ca. 1980) with successful basketball. Why not?

overall. Personally I think Coastal Carolina is moving way too fast, but they're also one of the fastest growing colleges in the state if not the region. I haven't been there in a long time but last time I visited campus it was a podunk little place, barely bigger than a community college. Now it's large both in terms of campus and students.
I don't think CCU will ever progress much past the Sun Belt. They will be the ECU of our state...occasionally good, but mostly an afterthought in major college football.

Costal Carolina is growing. The beach and all of that is attracting a lot of students. They already can play some sports with the "big boys"

Won't be Division 1 for long. Schools are making the jump to avoid being division 3. Soon we will see a split between FCS and FBS.

There is a split between FBS and FCS... that's why they are FBS and FCS. Truthfully speaking, Coastal was always Division 1 (AA). Clemson and USuCk were Division 1 (A). Now there are 3 FBS schools, formerly Division 1 (A). Furman, Citadel, Wofford are all still FCS. What you might see is a split between the Power 5 and either the NCAA or remain a part but create another division. It is already taking shape as people refer to the Power 5. It will be interesting to note if some of the other lower tier conferences lose some teams as some of those overachieving teams (NIU, Boise St, UCF, Marshall, etc.) try to create a 6th viable conference.
