UT's claim as WRU takes a hit

Vols freshman WR Williams' status in limbo
Ryan Callahan

Tennessee freshman wide receiver Preston Williams, a former five-star prospect, is not expected to be available for the start of preseason camp after his standardized-test score recently was flagged, a source confirmed to GoVols247 on Friday.

he 6-foot-4, 180-pound Williams, who was one of the stars of the Vols' 2015 recruiting class, now will be forced to retake his standardized test. According to a tweet by WNML radio's Jimmy Hyams on Friday morning, Williams made a "significant jump" that caused his test score to be flagged by the NCAA Eligibility Center.

A source told GoVols247 that a date has not been set for Williams to retake the test. His status for Tennessee's preseason practice, which officially begins Tuesday, remains uncertain.

Williams, a former standout at Lovejoy High School in Hampton, Ga., who's also coming off December surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament and lateral collateral ligament, was ranked by 247Sports as the nation's No. 29 overall prospect and No. 3 wide receiver in the 2015 class.

The Vols' already have parted ways with two of the newcomers from their 2015 recruiting class — tight end Kyle Oliver and wide receiver Jocquez Bruce — because of off-field issues.

Took a page out of Roy Williams criminal disgusting book

Take ex-NBA player DeShawn Stevenson, for example. Stevenson was a gifted high school player from Fresno who Roy Williams, then coach at Kansas, coveted. Trouble was, Stevenson was struggling to post an SAT score that would make him eligible as a freshman. His best score: 450. Williams was worried sick. In a last-ditch attempt Stevenson flew across country and re-tested. His new SAT score: 1150.

Williams was at Kansas at the time. But it’d have been far too obvious for Stevenson to take the SAT test there. But guess what? There was a high school basketball All-Star game in Raleigh in April of 2000, so let’s have Stevenson take the test there! It was Stevenson’s last shot to get a qualifying score. As the story goes, Stevenson’s test score improved significantly. Third time’s a charm!
