Just an informal poll. I just ran 3.5 miles in about 28

Jul 30, 2015, 7:01 PM

minutes in 95 degree heat. How many of you guys over 50 run in this heat? I wonder if there are more of us over 50 that run in the heat, than there are under 30 that run in the heat.

I run about 50 miles a week and I always run around 6:30PM. I enjoy running in the summer way more than I do in the winter.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Me too. Normally run a little later, but had to hustle up

Jul 30, 2015, 7:08 PM

today. I would rather run when it is 85 than 45.....But, this 95 degree crap is getting old...

I like it hot, the only problem is I get really cold after my runs.

I just turned 50 6/30/ 2015. I ran the MB Marathon last Feb . It was 19 when we started 30 and windy when we finished. I would rather it be about 65 the entire time. I also will be transitioning back to bike riding! Running is always a struggle. Good job by you!

I'm 60, but don't like to run if the temp is much above 85. Absolutely don't like running in the cold, though. Hot weather is better. That said, I don't run an 8 minute/mile pace...closer to 10/mile...generally 4 to 5 mile runs. When I refereed soccer, that was serious running...lots of sprints!

how the hell can you still run? My knees are shot, got a dropped foot, two lower lumbar discs removed and major DVT......but I pounded out three miles/day till about three years ago....now I have been struck by SAS....sudden aging syndrone.....I was not old this time last year but I am old now. But, the way the world is going....I don't care.

Oh, but you did sound a lil like spurrier as you propped up your old man fitness ??

Nice Pace in the heat. I'd give anything to run it myself...

Jul 30, 2015, 7:56 PM

Got the rarest injury ever.

With that said. Keep enjoying it!! I'd do anything to be able to suffer in the heat like that. I loved every minute of it. Hot, humid, hilly, cold, wind, rain.... didn't matter and I never had a run where I said to myself afterwards "that wasn't worth it".

when I was 25 and living in Cootlumbia...I'd run the Lake Murrey ### at about noon in the summertime....this was way before they had the pedestrian walkway....I was running against the traffic. 1975 or so.....Man, It was great to be young and in great shape. These days, bourbon helps me remember.

I'm 65 yo and have heart issues (atrial Fib), so I don't run nor do the heat thing. I just walk on the treadmill while watching last year's FB games on my computer screen. Last week I walked over 20 miles in a single day (45,000 steps), and yesterday I did 11 miles (25,000 steps). I have one of those FitBit monitors (to observe my heart pulse), and it challenges me daily to meet my goals. I just have to rest more often than when I was younger.

I ran track in HS (mile and 1/2 mile events) and loved to run all day - hot or cold. So my advice is - run WHEN you can, and WHILE you can. I miss that part of my life.

I put a towel in a bucket of ice water at the top of the stairs and wrapped it around my head

I'm 72 and quit running this year.

Jul 30, 2015, 10:21 PM

It never gets to 95 in Divide, CO. Maybe because I am at 9130 feet. The best races around here are in the May to early July time frame and when you get 8" of snow in mid-May it is hard getting in good training.

Dude what are you thinking? I was a little better than average track man in high School and college. I'm in reasonable shape still (but not the same of course) but I can't stand running now at age 57. I sure wouldn't do it in the heat of the mid 90's days we've been having lately.

Think about those age 50 joints being pounded...for what? and the high humidity and ozone your pulmonary system is having to deal with...why?

These are conditions our elite (and young) athletes have to train in to be at the top of their game. It isn't necessary for the rest of us and can indeed be dangerous.
