Jul 6, 2015, 1:47 PM

247Sports has him 100% Clemson

WR OrTre Smith Ht 6-3 Wt 205 40 4.67 CLASS OF 17
Mt. Pleasant (S.C.) Wando

NEW RANK PREV. RANK DIFFERENCE

"South Carolina seems to produce a star wide receiver every year or so and Smith looks like the next prospect to fit that mold. He is big and has impressive leaping ability to go with excellent hands, making him one of the best we have seen in his class so far."

My understanding is he is 100% Clemson, but we have not offered him. I believe his mother played basketball or volleyball for us, so I would love to get him - in state prospect that loves Clemson.

JUST A QUESTION FOR YOU PEOPLE ON THE BOARD. I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT INSTATE BASEBALL GUYS. IF WE HAVE A CHANCE TO GET A STUD RECEIVER FROM OUT OF STATE THAT IS BETTER THAN OrTRE SHOULD WE STILL GO AFTER OrTRE.

I am of the impression you should always offer what you deem to be the top 5 prospects in state. With that usually being only 20% of your recruiting class it seems to outweigh the risk of missing out on a player a couple years in the future.

If we don't offer here I'd highly question the "Clemson family" idea - offering the Davis twins, Trapp, Dawkins but not a potential star like Smith?

LOL, I AM GUESSING DAVIS, TRAPP AND DAWKINS ARE MORE OF A "FOOTBALL" FAMILY INSTEAD OF SOME WOMEN THAT PLAYED VOLLEYBALL. THERE ARE MANY MANY "FOOTBALL" LEGACIES THAT WE HAVE NOT OFFERED.

Speaks volumes about how awesome the 17 WR class is

Jul 6, 2015, 11:54 PM

Because it is indeed a loaded and talented group. The thing is, do you put OrTre at WR or DB?

He's got exceptional size and ball skills. Smith has a tremendous ability to find and high point the ball. Clearly he doesn't back down from contact which further begs the question; do you like him more as a DB or WR? While he may not be the burner that some prospects in the 17 class are, he still has a way to find and pluck the ball in mid air.

I will say that his knack for finding the ball is incredible when matched with his elite catching abilities. However, I'd put him at safety because he'd likely be as big or bigger than most WR's. Smith would definitely disrupt any play going over the top which makes the decision even harder. The argument could go either way. Regardless, some team will be very fortunate to have him on their roster.

Check out his film and bio below. I'll put his stuff out there as well as some other comparable WRs and DBs. Just gonna throw some names out there and you be the judge and feel free to let me know what you think. For once I'll try and leave my obvious slant towards JT Cauthen out of this because as most of you know- I'm really big on him as opposed to others who aren't. Seriously, this class is so deep with talent that I don't think one could go wrong on any of the prospects. Who would you take and why? There are plenty of targets I'm going to leave off here because I'm gonna try to keep this post within' data limits but it's not at all to slight anyone.

He was impressive from start to finish and he drew a lot of praise from the Nike coaching staff. He showed very good footwork in drills, quickness, ball skills, and the ability to cover. He is wide open early with over a dozen scholarship offers. Good chance he starts out in the Scout 100."

From Steve Wilfong on Pryor n Williams- "Pryor is one of the top cover safeties in the country, and Williams is such a competitor, quick, fast and fluid, he ran a 4.38 on this day."

Coaches have been talking to me about him since he was a freshman and he is going to have a lot of offers. He has a bright future." Scout's Chad Simmons' says: Remember this name. It is early, but Robinson flies around the field, he plays with aggression, and he delivers some huge hits at safety. From Coach Crosby- "There is not much Cann does not do well in the secondary. He is still a little light for a safety that loves to deliver big hits, and he does most things very well. He makes plays, he has exceptional hands, he closes on the ball well, and he has shown great bursts out of his breaks. He could get a look at corner too because of his feet and quickness. He is an all around athlete with big-play ability."
http://clemson.247sports.com/Article/Death-Valley-Insider-Profiling-The-Freak-28813177
"He plays with great maturity for his age and he is very smart in the secondary. He tracks the ball well, he has very good ball skills, and he covers a good amount of ground. He is going to get bigger, stronger, and he will become better in run support."
