According to some of the comments posted at the end if the article, it sounds like there may have been a rough crowd at the DV game vs ND in 77.

This story could be a red herring...

This is what I remember about the 77 game.

HUGE buildup for the game.

Students organized an "orange overall out" because of some condescending comments about the South.

Students organized a stadium-wide event that was the best orchestrated event besides the 300,000 baloon release against Maryland. It was called "The Silent Treatment" and it was awesome.

Clemson led most of the game and was up 20-7 going into the fourth quarter. ... Enter Joe Montana

After the game, an emotionally draing one, Dan Devine flipped off the Clemson Crowd as he left the field.

As he left the field near the visitors locker room, he flipped off the crowd again and someone threw a cup with ice on his head.

Classless exhibition by the coach at Notre Dame.

Hated them ever since.

Was at the '77 game. Before the game started devine had someone go onto the field with a tape measure to make sure the yard lines were correct. Chorus of boo's followed, but he didn't give a ####. Showed absolutely no respect.
