The term "Coot"

Just curious when and why it has become the most common slang for the Gamecocks. I often thought that would be a good one for the Oregon Ducks. I always thought "chickens", "bitties", lamecocks worked (like we get called kittens, and such). I do think the term "decootment is funny.

Coots are stupid birds . They will eat their own young . They also appear clumsy and drunk.
It is a very fitting moniker for those people.
