Clemson on track for back-to-back top 10 classes
Clemson in the top 10 of the RecruitingNation class rankings is becoming old hat. Following a No. 4 in the class rankings in February, the Tigers are back in the top 10 again with a class that features the No. 2 outside linebacker and No. 2 running back in the country.
Biggest commit this spring: Rahshaun Smith. The No. 22-ranked prospect in the ESPN 300 is a pass rushing outside linebacker prospect that has made a smooth transition from defensive end to linebacker in the past year. This is a recruiting win for coach Dabo Swinney and staff as Smith is from Maryland, but now goes to talent rich IMG Academy in Florida. That means Smith is a recruiting win in a key state along the Eastern Seaboard and a voice at IMG Academy, along with teammate and fellow pledge Tavares Chase.
How the class is shaping up: Clemson has hit a number of key areas already. Picking up quarterback Zerrick Cooper in the class following a two signal-caller class was huge. After not taking a back in 2015 and setting the tables, Jeff Scott and the offensive staff won on national signing day, getting the "must get" battle in-state in speedy back Tavien Feaster. A pair of receivers, Chase and Cornell Powell are solid possession prospects with physicality.
What they need to do next: Clemson is looking to keep adding depth on the defensive line and at linebacker, and is considered the prohibitive favorite for athletic tackle Nyles Pinckney and Under Armour All-American Game inside linebacker Tre' Lamar, with Lamar likely to come off the board in early June. Adding size and vertical ability at receiver is also a need, and ESPN 300 No. 122 Diondre Overton is another considered a lean to the Tigers. Offensive linemen Parker Boudreaux and John Simpson are top targets with Simpson residing in state. Adding an electric playmaker is also desired, but both top targets, Texas 100-meter champion Devin Duvernay and Peach State star Mecole Hardman Jr. are long shots.
