Longtime Columbia real estate executive Bob Russell, who was a Clemson graduate, died in a single engine plane crash near the Columbia Airport this morning.

Apparently, Russell was piloting the plane on a course to Asheville, when it went down due to engine failure into a small pond about two miles from the airport.

Russell, 85, was a longtime IPTAY donor and was co-founder and owner of Russell Jeffcoat Real Estate, one of the state's largest and oldest firms.

On a personal note I had known him for nearly 40 years, and he never ceased to express his love and support for Clemson.

Guess he crashed about 9:30 this morning. Went down in a pond very close to my home. Great man from what I knew. Prayers to his family.
