why do we park on driveways and drive on parkways?

It was one of those times today where I pondered the meaning of things.
Shortly I began thinking about lines of scrimmage.
Why does the offensive line essentially "defend" the offense and the defensive line "attack" the offense?
This is rhetorical for those that dont already know...

It has to do with the endzone not the line of scrimmage. Think basketball or soccer or water polo.
