Shameik Blackshear won't appear in court in court Tuesday; trial coming later

Bluffton High star defensive end and University of South Carolina recruit Shameik Blackshear will not appear in court Tuesday for a pending petit larceny charge, his attorney said Monday.
Attorney Thomas C. Taylor said Blackshear’s case has been continued to wait for Bluffton police to provide evidence in the discovery pretrial phase. Neither Taylor nor Blackshear will appear in Bluffton Municipal Court on Tuesday, Taylor said.
Blackshear was charged Feb. 13 with petit larceny after allegedly taking a purse and safe from a Mill Creek home Feb. 7, two days after he signed a letter of intent to play for the Gamecocks. Three witnesses told police they saw Blackshear take the items, which were valued at $1,390, but Blackshear told police he was never at the house.
Taylor said Blackshear will go to trial on the petit larceny charge at an unspecified date.
Both the USC athletics department and football coach Steve Spurrier have said USC will let the legal process finish before deciding on Blackshear’s status.
Blackshear, a 6-foot-4, 230-pound senior, was a top recruit but struggled with injuries over his final two high school seasons. He tore the ACL in his left knee during the Bobcats’ second game of 2014.
