The Basketball "Rebuild"

Feb 28, 2015, 3:29 PM

Can someone please tell me when this started or will start?

People talking like it starts next year, but it feels like we have been rebuilding for the last 3-4 years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Brownell has been trying to rebuild since he got here.

Feb 28, 2015, 3:35 PM

He had some talent had first year left from OP, but once they left the talent level dropped. 4 years later and he's not back to that level yet.

Feb 28, 2015, 3:36 PM

So, what is industry standard for a time period for a rebuild?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Typically 4-5 years I'd say. I think Brownell is getting a

break however since our facilities had fallen behind. At some point he's gotta produce though.

All with no home games next year. That's recruiting on the hard level.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: His last class and incoming class are his best

Feb 28, 2015, 3:39 PM

So. That wasn't the question. Just because he doesn't have a "home" court next year doesn't mean the season doesn't count. Life isn't fair at times.

The question is: How long do you get to rebuild a program?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No definitive number

Feb 28, 2015, 3:42 PM

It depends on numerous program factors.

Again, it may not be completely fair to Brownell, but at some point he will have to own this and be held accountable. Unfortunately for him, the timing may be all wrong.

Funny. I watched Hoosiers this morning.

"10 ft."

"Just like our gym at home."

I know you will come with an atmosphere and Gameday prep angle now. Thumbs down my post and play semantics.

Indiana now plays class basketball, because it turns out a 1in 100 year small school team can't justify keeping an open tournament. It's almost like talent and facilities mean something.

Re: Student support will be minimal

Feb 28, 2015, 4:13 PM

According to everyone on here we don't have any home court advantage now.

Our best wins have been on the road where we have zero advantage.

Home court advantage is part of an advantage. Having talent and coaching is a bigger advantage.

Pretty sure the UK team last year would have been a #1 seed if they played at a high school in Texas.

You get my point with the amount of nba players they produce.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No I don't

Feb 28, 2015, 4:19 PM

Rupp is one of the big reasons they recruit all of those NBA players.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: No I don't

Feb 28, 2015, 10:11 AM

I would argue it is Calapari and Pitino. We saw what talent was there when Self was there. And it was the same arena.

Look at UNC. Same arena with Smith and Williams as with Dougherty.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Cal doesn't come without Rupp.

Feb 28, 2015, 4:23 PM

So there is that. History and world class facilities are kind of important.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Cal doesn't come without Rupp.

Feb 28, 2015, 4:25 PM

Exactly, Blossomgame just stated on Twitter, how horrible our student section is. We have to pour money into facilities and get attendance up or we will repeat the same performance we've had FOREVER in basketball.

I am sure she has a stunning reputation.

Well

Feb 28, 2015, 4:37 PM

She is working on a way to keep children with MD alive longer, so there is that.

I would love to read her research and review any clinical trials she has been part of. Seriously.

Where can I find them since I have family with MD? I am sincere with this.

She was on call this morning

Feb 28, 2015, 5:04 PM

She necropsied a steer and a roadrunner. You should check out the MD research coming out of TAMU.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: She was on call this morning

Feb 28, 2015, 5:06 PM

Those are two very different sized animals. Was she specifically looking at MD with this and cardiomyopathy?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No this had to deal with her duties

Feb 28, 2015, 5:16 PM

Her research looks at dogs with muscular dystrophy. She handles the hearts and does stuff with RNA. It's a little beyond my pay grade to explain much more in depth. The overall goal is to look at MD dogs hearts and identify the pathways causing the breakdown of cardiac tissue. Or something like that.

We have had the, occasional, four or five year run of respectability but it will not happen with any kind of consistency. If you don't like Brownell, fine but we will NEVER be able to find a better replacement either without resources and commitment to the program. You will get it one way or another so the Brownell versus the unnamed amazing successor becomes a non point.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Dude, I tried 2 times to tell you we aren't talking about a

Feb 28, 2015, 3:55 PM

Who else is talking about us having to rebuild.

We have improved every year except this one record wise and our schedule in ACC is brutal.

BB year 1- NCAA second round (something Purnell could not do)
BB year 2- young team no tourney or NIT
BB year 3- NIt 2nd round
BB Year 4- NIT semi finals
BB year 5- ????

We did take a little bit of a dip this year but who expected much losing KJ. I heard ,any say we wouldn't win 3 ACC games and we have a great chance to finish in the top half when picked 14th.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

from the ESPN recap of today's game:

Feb 28, 2015, 3:59 PM

Tigers coach Brad Brownell won eight ACC games for the fourth time in his first five seasons, which had not been accomplished previously in program history.

Brownell's first season. Literally also. "OP's team" consisted of 9 scholarship players. Thankfully one of those was Demontez Stitt, who is the common denominator in all four of Clemson's NCAA appearances the last decade.

The consensus seems to be that Brownell will get 7-8 years

Feb 28, 2015, 3:49 PM

He was a highly rated recruit - 4 star top 75 in the country

Feb 28, 2015, 4:06 PM

Not really unexpected. Expectations are pretty low for next year with the arena under construction. With Blossomgame fully healthy and his legs back under him completely, he may decide it's time to move on after 4 years, and hopefully a big one next year, in Clemson. That would probably lower expectations for his 7th year, making the 8th year THE year.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Feb 28, 2015, 4:04 PM

He is waaay overachieving with the roster he has. Recruiting and building depth has been slow going, that's agreed, but the rebuild is clearly underway. Considering what he's doing with a roster with less talent and especially experienced depth, imagine what he'll do with a couple more players and more experience. The rebuild is obvious is happening right in front of your eyes.
