Still mystified how Ole Miss & MissST both became ToP 5 teams so fast &

Jan 31, 2015, 10:51 AM

In the exact year (2014)..and then stayed in ToP 10 or so even after 2-3 losses!

Saying, What went on at those two fairly non-discript schools to rush onto the national scene so fast..other than great recruiting (know Ole Miss turned several of our 4-5* commits which seemed rather odd)..or Did they cheat?

What know You?

SEC hype is why they rose so quickly, and stayed

Bowl games proved it was all hype.

There was a write up on this a few months ago. It compared the SEC to other teams and showed the bias that the SEC gets when it comes to rankings. The end result of the year for those teams shows it also.

Just shows what a joke the rankings are as well as esucsecpn are.

That's what happens when your Daddy (eSECpn)

controls the TV and the poll. Sort of like the pitcher is always the coach's son.

Mississippi State, IMHO, was sort-of legit...at least, I think they were built the right way. Dan Mullen built a team of largely 2-and-3-star players up with good coaching, good development, and a good scheme. They were kind of undersized but very quick on defense...they ultimately got exposed down the stretch as a pretty good team pretending to be an elite team, but Dak Prescott was the best QB in the country not called Marcus Mariota or Jameis Winston this past year. When you get a truly elite QB - and Prescott is without question the best they've had in 30 years or so - and the rest of your team is pretty decent and is mostly composed of seniors to boot, you're going to have a formidable team. Were they ever at all deserving of the #1 ranking the playoff committee was giving them midseason? I never saw it. I thought they were Top-10-to-Top-15 good, and ultimately that's where they fell.

They do return Prescott, but they lost something like 15 seniors this past year. They won't be a factor in 2015, IMHO.

Ole Miss, on the other hand, I am a lot less sold is legit. Hugh Freeze is a bit...sketchy (he was Michael Oher's high school coach from The Blind Side, who somehow parlayed Oher's commitment into a job with Ole Miss), and the Rebels, like Mississippi State, was mostly composed of 2-and-3-star guys...with some notable exceptions. The year after a 7-6 campaign, with Freeze and Ole Miss showing absolutely no indication whatsoever they were on track to be anything better than they've been the last 50 years or so, they suddenly yanked down a monster recruiting class headlined by Robert Nkimdiche, a Georgia product and the #1-rated DE in high school football (Nkimdiche, you undoubtedly remember, had been committed to Clemson), Laremy Tunsil, a Florida product and the #1-rated OT in high school football, and Laquan Treadwell, an Illinois product and the #1-rated WR in high school football.

Sorry, but when you're a second-tier school and you yank down not one but three top-ranked 5-stars at their respective positions, and they're all from out of state, something is amiss. And when Treadwell and Tunsil both went down, Ole Miss's offense was...putrid. TCU ran them right out of the building in their bowl game and could have named their score. That wasn't a good system, or good coaching...that was a team propped up by three guys who were heads and shoulders better than the other guys around them. And those guys were guys you never, ever would expect to be attending a second-tier program like Ole Miss to begin with.

None of what you said means squat when you lose the games they lost lol

These teams benefit from over-inflated rankings AND a lack

of poll consequences when they lose.

A lot of this was exposed this bowl season, but ten non- SEC teams need to keep it up to avoid this being viewed as an anomaly. At least a playoff takes the ultimate result away from pollsters. I'd like to see an 8- team playoff in the future.

Just proves what we already know. The committee has no validity and are not to be taken seriously

Ole Miss cheated. Miss St did it right way with very good coach and a cyborg qb
