Who was the "worst" team we ever played on the road?

Jan 28, 2015, 12:40 PM

I was surprised to see that NC State is playing both Old Dominion and South Alabama on the road this season. Seems like that wouldn't make sense for anybody financially. I can't remember us ever playing a team like that on the road. Who would you say was the worst team we played on the road in the last 35-40 years (by "worst" I mean non-power-5 school that offered little to no competition).

Marshall

Marshall also went unbeaten that year

And was ranked #10 in both final polls.

2003 @ Williams Brice in Columbia . No way we should have even wasted a good road trip on that buncha louts.

Agreed they were bad and we were worse.

Since they didn't belong to a "Power 5" conference then...

Jan 28, 2015, 12:49 PM

I'll nominate the 1989 South Carolina Gamecocks. Talk about offering "little to no competition"! It was 14-0 before South Carolina ran their second play from scrimmage.

Back in 1972, Clemson played at Rice...

and lost 29 - 10.

Prior to that it was Furman in Greenville back in the early 60's.

They most have set up a 2 for 1 kinda deal so n state doesn't have to pay them.

it was the hoos' first ever night gane in scott stadium.

48-0 in a driving rain. the uva student section was rooting for clemson to score again by game's end.

Oddly I think the game at Columbia in 1989 (45-0) was even more dominating than the 63-17. It was the game where Terry Allen got hurt and Blunt came in and ran all over SC. Clemson only threw in that game when they got bored with gaining chunks on the ground, played everybody, and I don't remember SC crossing the 50 but once all night.

They do this for recruiting. Mobile is a hot bed of talent. Miss State played there this past for that reason. Navy is too.

Missouri in 1996. They had like 20 losing seasons in a row.

Jan 28, 2015, 2:40 PM

I'm embellishing a bit but they had no business beating Clemson. They had lost to Memphis the week prior.

Jan 28, 2015, 7:22 PM

It has to be the VT games in the 1980's. They were independent then and it was before Beamer got them rolling in the 1990's. At the time they were a glorified Southern Conference team.

Other than that we haven't played any teams on the road from non-power conferences (or power indys like ND) on the road. Interesting enough we would have, but the teams either bought out the games (Tulane in 2001, La Tech in 2008) or moved the road game to a neutral site (Temple in 2006).
