The Detroit/Indiana brawl (where Ron Artest and a couple others went up into the stands to fight fans) was literally the night before our melee' as well.
Something in the air that year in sports.

No, what would be embarrassing is if we'd allowed them to take over our field like the punks they are. This is not a ballet recital...things get very heated in the game of football. I was at this game, and as soon as we ran down the hill, these losers met us at the bottom flapping their jaws. It all boils down to 'don't start nothin, won't be nothin'.

to this day I lay blame directly on Lou Holtz' shoulders for failure to control his team, beginning with allowing them access near our hill area during our entry.
This incident only served to reinforce my distaste for that POS, going back to his days at N.C. State. That he now slobbers his way through ESPN's broadcasts validates my belief in the lack of institutional control at that network.
Unsurprisingly, a number of Gamecock folks I know agree.
