Worst D-line ever….

Oct 30, 2014, 10:56 AM

Does no one remember 2011 or 2012? A great, great O with the coming of Nuk and Tajh, Sammy, Li' Bit, D-wayne, and The Chad.

But for all the O, what a sad, sad D. Most of all we were lacking in interior D-line - in fact we really didn't have enough bodies to run the 2-deep at the time. We had quite literally been gutted right in the middle of the defense. We had lost (or were losing) Miguel Chavis, Jarvis Jenkins, and Brandon Thompson to the NFL from the interior and both the talent and the depth were gone. Rennie Moore, the spiritual leader of the group, was graduating too. We had a huge hole up the middle, and the scoring defense showed it. It was so bad that the loss of one recruit - Montravius Adams to Auburn - seemed the end of the line for dominating defensive interiors at Clemson. It was whispered, tactfully of course, that Dabo could recruit skill, that the Scotts could bring in Florida speed on the edge, but that none of them could close the deal on defense.

And the cry went up from the faithful: where were the days of Devane and the Fridge, Dan Benish and Ray Brown; and their progeny, Chester and Michael Dean, Rob Bodine and of course, Brentson Buckner? How could things go to hell so badly? How could the cupboard be allowed to go so bare?

And now look at Clemson - we have no doubt the best D-line in the country. As dominating a group as there has been in years across the landscape of college football. Back-to-back years leading the country in tackles for loss. Top 5 in sacks. No one argues any more about being dominated on the line of scrimmage; not even by the likes of Virginia Tech, Ohio State, LSU, UGA, or Auburn.

And it all started with the unheralded local kid, DeShaun Williams. It all started with a wrestler, Grady Jarrett. Who knew? Did you?

Seriously; when you think of this how can anyone question our coaching staff? How can anyone not simply have faith that this staff can and does deliver all that is needed to make sure our program is not only relevant and respected, but at times feared as well.

So here's to you naysayers, nancy pants, and numbskulls. You whined and whimpered in 2011 that it was all over, that a Wide Receiver's coach couldn't bring back the pride on defense. You proclaimed your own knowledge and arrogance as if it mattered one iota.

We didn't listen to you then, and we're not listening to you now. We have faith in this team, this staff, and this program. You? Not so much.

You see, you're just the bad furniture that every house has, accumulated over time, survivors, barely, of one misbegotten fad or another. We shove the likes of you all into one room, the back parlor, the moldy basement, or the garage turned bedroom, and quite literally pray for one good fire. Oh yeah, we see you from time to time when coming through to clean house, sitting there with all your gaudy pastels, your overdone flowers, and your clashing drapes-come-coverings, begging for attention, panting for just a little relevance. But the rest of the time, well, we just close the door behind us on the way out and merrily go about our business of being a Top 10 to 15 program, quite happy to forget that little madhouse you call home. See ya’ guys….
