Tiger Nation lost a good one yesterday

Oct 21, 2014, 7:20 PM

I am sad to report that Dean Ross, who was a former band director at Clemson, and who is responsible for bringing "Tiger Rag" to Clemson, died yesterday. Dean and his wife Ramona were incredible people and we were proud to call them friends.

The Tiger Rag
Clemson’s band director in 1942, Dean Ross, stumbled upon “Tiger Rag”, originally recorded and copyrighted by the Original Dixieland Jass Band in 1917, in an Atlanta music store. Also known as “the song that shakes the southland”, the Tiger Rag was brought back to Clemson to be taught to the Tiger Band to play at football games. Since 1942, the Tiger Band has learned more than 15 ways to play the Tiger Rag and performs at all Tiger sporting events, pep rallies, and parades.

that "Tiger Rag" has always been a part of our program.

I had forgotten its origin and salute Dean Ross for his contribution to Tiger lore.

It must have been a bad day for former band directors at Clemson. I am sad to say that Dr. Bruce Cook, longtime band director at Clemson also died last night. I am not sure of the time frame that Dr. Cook's reign as director but he was there for many years. The family will make arrangements today and funeral plans will be announced by Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central. www.robinsonfuneralhomes.com.

Keep the Tiger Band in your prayers for homecoming.
