"Pin their ears back"

Sep 18, 2014, 11:02 AM

please explain to me what the hell this means. I don't think anyone actually knows but everyone uses it because it sounds like something smart to say. I have lost track of the times I have seen "pin their ears back" in reference to the defense in the last few weeks.

I think it refers to

dogs when they're fighting. They pull their ears back and get very aggressive. I could be wrong...but that would be a first.

Actually, according to this article, we use the term

incorrectly.
It actually means to show submission. It does involve dogs though.

I don't think this article actually uses the term correctly in context to sports. Usually it is used when a team is preparing to make a big play or is getting serious about the game. This is the case when referring to a D-Line pinning their ears back on 3rd down to go after the QB.

I do believe they correctly call out animal behavior but it refers to an animals actions before attack. Yes it could be a submissive behavior but generally non domesticated animals are the most dangerous when they are scared.

Just like a team who has been beat down in a game before pinning their ears back and getting after it to come back for the win.
