DSP sent me a Tmale blasting me for wanting to "defer"

He said that we should choose to kick. You always defer, right, even if you want to play defense first?
Someone help me explain this simple concept.

If we win the toss we defer. They will then choose to take the kick-off. We then get the kick-off to start the second half thus keeping Winston off the field. If they win the toss they defer. Then Winston gets to start the second half opening drive.
