This "continuing to participate w/o helmet" personal foul

Aug 30, 2014, 1:40 PM

penalty is lame.

It's going to be decisive in a big game this year unfortunately.

It's a rule I actually like

It's a safety rule that makes sense.

Unless it's applied incorrectly I'm not sure what the objection is to it. The rule was (since I can remember) that the ball carrier cannot continue if his helmet comes off, why is it incorrect to apply that logic to other players on the field?

UCLA had a PR called back...

after the kid put his helmet back on and THEN continued to play. Once the helmet is back on (provided the chin straps are ALSO buckled), why continue to hold the kid out of the play?

Agreed. They should only have stop while they put their helmet back on.

In some situations (e.g. a loose ball) football instincts take over and there's no way a player stops playing. This penalty plus the "come off the field for a play" rule have the unintended consequence of incentivising players to rip helmets off, which I believe is happening.

I understand the push for safety, but a personal foul IMO is excessive. Should be like 5 yards without the big play reversing potential of a personal foul.

I guess players need to start super glueing their helmets on lol.
