Has there ever been a time since the early '90s

That we've had 5 athletes on the defensive side of the ball on the same level as Beasley, Anthony, Grady, Alexander and Kearse? The latter 2 still have much to prove, but I'm talking from a pure "tools" standpoint?
It just seems if all 5 of these guys have good years that it's hard to envision us not having a top 5 defense.

Not to mention the depth, especially on the line

There won't be much drop off when the back-ups come in. That should frighten the crap out of opponents.

Exactly, I haven't even gone into mentioning Crawford, Reader, Smith, etc.
Heck, I think Deshawn Williams would start on a lot of teams and he's 3rd in the rotation at his position.

You keep forgetting Lawson. Maybe the best combination of size/talent on the line.

a top 5 defense is really a possibility is it?
From a statistical standpoint that is...just seems like our defense has more possessions than most.

Is like to see the D possess the bal 5 or six times a game..... It'd be great for them to out score our O..... And for our O to score 28 plus a game

I actually wouldn't mind scoring fewer points as long as the points aren't as reliant on boom or bust.
I have no problems with Chad Morris' philosophy and I completely get it, but there's nothing wrong with letting your own defense rest.

this season due to quick scores. And that's fine. Possess the ball more. Wear 'em down.

of offense this year. We will still take shots downfield, but I think they will be fewer and setup even more. I think the overall game plan will be to possess the ball for loner drives relying on ground game and Cole's accuracy and decision making for "safer" throws.
Lower turnovers by our offense, rested & uber-talented defense. I think this is a good game plan for beating the Dawgs, Coots and FSU.

Maybe not unless we run the ball 100 times more than we have the past 2 years. I think it was still top 25 last year even with all the yards UGA, FSU and OSU were able to get.
Hopefully with Kearse and Alexander we can make opposing QBs pay for mistakes more often than in the past. I feel like prior to last year, we've dropped a lot of INTs over the past half-decade.

All I know is if our secondary can't cover the D will be about as good as last season. That will be the key to a top D, they have got to stop giving up long pass plays.

He lives in Charlotte, that's pretty much the North anyway. Haha, I grew up literally 20 minutes outside of Charlotte and many of the transplants there act like I'm an alien with my tobaccer and country talk. So I understand Bob's yankee plight.

That's true...it's easy to overlook how talented that squad was due to how atrocious the offense was that year.
That said, I think the depth gives us a slight edge this year. I also think that even though Bowers was impressive, he doesn't change a gameplan like Beasley.

we had a lot of very good players in the secondary and at LB

When Bowden was coach, we had teams with guys like Tye Hill, Waters, Washington, and Justin Miller on them at the same time. Later, we had teams with guys like Maxwell, Gilchrist, McDaniel, and Chancellor along with some pretty good DL talent.
I also forgot to mention guys like Chris Clemons, Sensabaugh, Crezdon Butler, Kavell Conner and Mike Hamlin. We've really improved the overall depth at DL and LB, but I think we were actually better in the secondary in the 2000s.
Guys like that might be the reason why we pretty much always finished in the top 25 in defense in the 2000s but are only just now cracking it again under Swinney.

Just to play devil's advocate:
Jul 23, 2014, 1:17 PM
|
|
2010 Defense had: Da'Quan, Malliciah Goodman, Jarvis, Jenkins, Brandon Thompson, Andre Branch, Marcus Gilchrist, DeAndre McDaniel, Jonathan Meeks, Byron Maxwell, and Coty Sensabaugh.
All of those guys (save D-Mac) are still in the league (and D-Mac would've been a first-rounder if he hadn't come back and inexplicably sucked that year).
That's a pretty loaded D.
