How strength of schedule looks for National Champions

Jul 21, 2014, 10:45 PM

I got to thinking about what each national champion's strength of schedule was and how much it really helps, so here's what I found:

(Sagarin SOS)
2013 - FSU #62
2012 - Bama #19
2011 - Bama #15
2010 - Auburn #13
2009 - Bama #2
2008 - Florida #4
2007 - LSU #11
2006 - Florida #8
2005 - Texas #13
2004 - USC #7
2003 - LSU #28/USC #19
2002 - Ohio St #30
2001 - Miami #27
2000 - Oklahoma #14
1999 - FSU #11
1998 - Tenn #25

Average SOS ranking: 18.1

Out of the 17 teams listed above, only 4 of them completed the season with a top-10 SOS ranking. Now with the 4-team playoff, will SOS matter more or less?

How do you keep an ax sharp? Some teams can luck into it but

Jul 22, 2014, 8:51 AM

I say you have to be tested by good teams to realize your strengths and weaknesses. If you play only roly poly puty teams when the time comes to face the very best you will be at a disadvantage. JMHO.

Some of those are just numbers based on the SEC hype. Kind of like grade inflation. The top teams ought to be required to play other top teams in their out of conference games. If they only play the "top teams in their on conference", then you are basing it on human polls. How do you explain TAM and Missouri coming into the SEC and winning like they have? Are you super human after joining that conference? I don't think so.

Mentioned this before... Those 'super SEC Ds' have been

facing mediocre Os for the most part of the BCS era.... The top tier teams have had some really good Ds but the SEC as a whole left a lot to be desired as far as Os....

all you have to do is score one more point to win. defense wins championships. you can't score if your offense is on the sidelines. that is how the coots have beat us, time of possession and ball control. short passing game, run game and play action. they have limited our number of times to be on offense more with their offense than with their defense. gt showed the blueprint in morris first year here. play man press with your corners, be physical with the receivers, and knock them off their routes because our passing game is timing oriented. this style also allows more time to pressure the qb.
