world soccer popularity

I am a big soccer fan. My 2nd favorite sport(behind tennis). I follow the euro leagues all year round and the international competitions like world cup qualifying. HOWEVER I believe that the popularity if soccer worldwide is a bit overrated.
Take a look at the worlds most populous countries and which sports are most popular there.
1. China 1.3 Billion - table tennis, olympic sports... soccer down the list. National team very bad
2. India 1.2 billion - cricket a religion. field hockey 2nd. Tennis 3rd. soccer down the list. National team ghastly. One of the worst in the world.
3. USA 318 million - soccer around 5-7th in popularity. national team pretty good.
ok so far we have 2.8 billion living in a country where soccer is not the most popular. lets keep going.
4. Indonesia 252 million - badminton biggest sport. Soccer way down, national team one of the worlds worst.
5. Brazil 202 million - soccer a religion
6. Pakistan 188 million - cricket huge. field hockey 2nd, soccer far down. National team, another one of the worlds worst,
7. Nigeria 178 million - soccer pretty much only sport in the country
8. Bangladesh 156 million - cricket. National soccer team one of the worlds worst
9. Russia 146 million - soccer pretty popular, near the top. Slightly behind ice hockey. tennis big as well and olympic sports, Hosting next world cup, may push soccer to #1 in the country.
10. Japan 127 million - soccer #2 behind baseball.
so of the top 10. Only 2 countries have soccer as their #1 sport. and 5 of the top 10 do not even have soccer anywhere on the radio.
11. Mexico 119 million - soccer #1 by far
12. Philippines 99 million - martial arts, basketball. soccer far down, very bad national team
13. Vietnam 89 million - um poker #1? Very bad soccer team and not anywhere on the national radar,
14. Ethiopia 87 million - distance running #1. Soccer #2. Decent national team that is improving
ok now is where soccer takes over for a bit. 15-20 is all soccer 100% #1 15. Egypt 86 million 16. Germany 80 million 17. Iran 77 million 18. Turkey 76 million 19. DR Congo 69 million - basketball gaining ground 20. France 65 million
21. Thailand 64 million - tennis, martial arts popular. Soccer way down the list, national team horrible
22. UK 64 million - soccer #1
23. Myanmar 61 million - soccer nowhere on the radar. Really bad national team
24. Italy 60 million - soccer
25. South Africa 52 million - soccer

the US and that it will keep growing. I just bought the last 6 years of sports participation data, and soccer participation in the US has decreased every year. Yes, TV ratings are great, and everyone loves to cheer for their country- but if a sport is "growing" there has to be an increasing number of people actually playing the sport. Many people are cheering for USA vs. the world during the World Cup, not cheering because they suddenly love soccer.

You are aware that youth participation is down across the board in almost every sport? Baseball, Football, Basketball, and Soccer. LAX is basically the only one showing any growth and that is due mainly to it being new.
You are welcome fro the facts #### lover.

about 4.2 billion people live in a country where soccer is NOT the most popular sport, of 7 billion in the world. (obviously this is super general because there are people in India,China,Usa etc who like soccer the best and there are people in brazil who like another sport more, this is just rating them based on the overall perception of the sport in that country)
60% of the world roughly lives in a country where soccer is not #1. However soccer is the most popular sport in about 38% of the world's countries which is by far more than any other sport in the world,

I don't really like the term, but most of the "1st world

countries" are into soccer, and that brings more $$$ than sheer population. It might be better if you look at it in terms of GDP. Wiki links here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_%28nominal%29 and here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_continents_by_GDP_%28nominal%29
Asia is 60% of the world's population, but roughly 30% of the world's GDP. North America and Europe are both around 30% of GDP despite having less than 20% of the world population combined. Africa + South America are about 8% of GDP and the rest is "Oceania" which is mainly just Australia.
Europe - all soccer (counting Russia here) South America - all soccer Africa - all soccer North America - just Mexico (US is football, basketball, baseball and Canada is obviously hockey) Asia - weird crap (aside from Japan that likes baseball and soccer) but they account for 60% of the world population.
Even looking at it in these terms soccer-first countries are still quite a ways behind everyone else combined, but if you were to actually break it down by #1 sports soccer would have a huge lead on everything else. Football would be #2 just because of the economic power of the US, but it would trail soccer by a pretty substantial margin.
